getting this msg, have tried last known good config with no help. laptop was on during the night, don't know if I got a MS update and it rebooted, but woke up to this. using another laptop for help

Solution
Good news at last - the system is in there and working to a degree. It may take a while to load or may not load at all. Give it as long as fifteen minutes and if nothing shows, press Control Shift and Escape at the same time. If you're offered Task Manager, click on Processes then from the File menu, choose New Task, type in explorer.exe and press Enter. If you get to something approaching normality, click the Recycle Bin and see if msgina.dll in there.

Does the system you're posting from have a copy of msgina.dll in there somewhere?

Don't fall for any Internet offers of free replacement files. Look in your Recycle Bin first - it may still be there.

The usual cause of that message used to be when another Gina had taken over from the Microsoft version. Have you installed anything new in the last day or so? If you run a system wide search for the file, does it show up? I'm not in XP at the moment but you may find there's a spare copy in c:\windows\service pack files or c:\windows\i386.

thank you for being so fast with this. However, I'm a neophyte here. How do I do a search if I can't access? the user interface failure comes up with a restart button. I can do the F8 access but last known config does nothing

It's possible an update caused it - they seem to be the root of many XP problems lately. If Last Known Configuration fails, how about Safe Mode with Command Prompt? That can usually open where other options fail.

One to sort this is by using a back door into the Windows system using Linux as a LiveCD so you can access the file structure. As you've said in a PM you're not exactly over qualified to do that, I think the best answer is a professional fixer in your area. That said, try Command Prompt and post back for more information if you get in.

ok, not qualified using linux/live cd. how do I command prompt? safe mode seems to do nothing as well. The screen comes up with safe mode @ 4 corners but no data shows.
