Long time to connect to servers in CSS

I am finding I am usually the last to connect to a server when playing
CS:Source; it takes about 50 seconds to a minute when I double click on a
server, and also when a server changes map. This often means I miss out on
the pistol round. The delays are at the "receiving server info" and "sending
client info" stages. My PC is fairly new (3.2 GHz, 1GB ram, 1Mb broadband
connection), and I believe the spec isn't the problem.

I've searched on google, and all I could find was a tip on CS1.5, which
suggested deleting the custom.hpk file (stores all downloaded sprays
apparently). This file doesn't seem to exist in CSS.

I have tried deleting previously downloaded sounds, and also the TEMP
directory in the "materials" directory, which has a load of vtf files
(sprays too?). Neither of these made any difference. Other people online
have said they take 8-15 seconds to connect, and always make it in time for
the pistol round when the map changes.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated!
Thanks,
Jez.

1Mb broadband is fine bandwidth wise, but how's your ping/latency and
choke/packet loss?

My ping is normally about 50-60; can be as low as 40, as high as 80,
depending on the server. I don't know what the choke/packet loss is... how
do I check?
Thanks
Jez

Thanks for the info - I tried that, and found the following: loss
permanently on 0, choke on 0 for 99% of the time, but sometimes flicked to 1
or 2 momentarily. Presumably this means my connection is generally ok?

Still taking nearly a minute to connect to servers / wait for map change.

Jez.

I have a similar system and 2Mb ADSL and it takes me 30-40 seconds to connect.
It used to be much much faster but the past 2 or 3 patches have slowed it down.
I suspect the VAC2 beta but I can't be certain

You could try installing Ethereal and getting a packet dump to see where
the delay is. Is your hard drive churning away while you wait for the
map or is it silent?
