Longevity of build

Hello, I'm currently getting my degree in programming and web design. My current PC is a Frankenstein that's 9 years old and can barely keep up with much of anything. It needs to be retired

I'd like to have a budget build that will last me another 4 years. We are using VS 2015, and at some point my instructor says we'll be making videos.

I installed VS 2015 on my PC and it didn't like it. It took 4.5 hours of trying and trouble shooting with my instructor to get it downloaded. Her I told her my PC was 9 years old she said I needed to replace it.

I assumed it would be okay but I guess I was wrong. It has an AMD quad core @ 3.2 ghz, 8 gb of RAM, and two Gts 450 fermis in sli. I can't do games on mid or high settings (aside from LOL) but I thought it would have been good enough for visual studio. In any case, it needs to be replaced.

So here I am with this budget build on pcpartpicker, I'd like to know if anybody has any insight as to whether or not this will do what I need for the next four years. Coding on VS, web development, and apparently some kind of video creation which she was very vague about.

Thank you all for your time. I'm really out of the tech loop compared to the other students in my classes (I'm 35) and these kids are wiz-kids as far as I can tell. I need to up my tech knowledge. Sites like these are incredibly helpful. Thanks again!

FX Series are very outdated. Intel's Skylake line up is way better

I like his build but the Micro ATX Board looks a bit out of place in a ATX Mid Tower case... Especially
when it has a window.

There you go ! Perfect ..... Nice build by the way. If he wants longevity for his build then I'd recommend him getting an RX 480
as more and more titles are supporting Vulcan and DX 12 which the RX 480 leaves the RX 480 in the dust
and has more Vram. Honestly i think he would be better suited with the RX 480. What are you thoughts?

Thank you for the information! I never thought about the newer platform at all. You'd have figured it would have been the first thing that would come to mind when replacing a 9 year old computer. So Intel looks like the way to go here. I'm surprised you guys were able to stay within the $1,000 realm of my budget using Intel. I'm glad I asked.

I just hit up google about the xeon processors. Excellent advice. Thank you. It says under workloads they shine, seeing as how I'm more concerned about the coding aspect I'll go with the xeon. Cripes, there's a lot of things to research. Thanks for the advice, both of you!

OP, you should go with a i7-6700 and the 8GB RX 480. Going with CTurbo's suggestion, a Xeon with a strange board on the Skylake platform makes no sense at all. The Xeon actually consumes more power than the i7. The Mini GTX 1060 didn't have a good cooling solution (no heatpipes) and would throttle under load. Go for this instead:

What do you mean? It's a Skylake Xeon on a Skylake motherboard. What is strange about that? You would rather the OP spend $40 more for nothing just because you are unfamiliar with LGA1151 C232 motherboards? Look at the specs and you'll see it's really just a B150 in disguise.

Yes but I picked a B150 board with Four RAM slots for the longevity of build vs the two in the C232 board. The i7 does outperform the Xeon while consuming less power. You also have the integrated video as a backup in case the video card ever dies. I believe it's worth the extra cost.

Looking at the benchmarks, there's about a 5% difference. One of the main features that the Xeons provide is ECC memory support, but the model you picked doesn't support ECC memory and has only two RAM slots. I would have selected a better motherboard with four RAM slots and support for ECC at least.

Your build to be honest is all over the place . That motherboard is very low quality for a budget of $1,000.

Bottom line stick with Cturbo

I've never had a problem with PRO series motherboards by MSI. They have always worked flawlessly.
