looking for a good cpu for gaming. just for gaming.

i have read some reviews about the i7 4790k and at first, it blew my mind (because of the specs and it is expensive as it's codename). also i saw the i5 4690k which they say is good enough for gaming for years to come. now, Intel Xeon E3-1231V3 is in the equation. any reccomedations and opinions?

i don't know how to overclock (if someone can teach me, it would be great and appreciated), maybe i will if i know how to. i just want to use it for gaming and pair it with my gtx 980 HOF. so bottomline, which is the better, best bang for buck and be able to serve my pc for years to come and play latest games.

go with Intel Xeon E3-1231V3 if you demand the best also it bung for buck since you are not going to use intel hd 4600 which is integrated into the i5 so why pay for it

yes. xeon doesn't have the igpu like i7 and i5 since i have a 980 but hyperthreaded like the i7 (though don't know if it will help me with anything). also it is said that Intel Xeon E3-1231V3 is like locked i7. i am really confused and don't know what to get.

Xeon is a great CPU, if you will be rendering, video editing and gaming. For pure gaming, the i5-4690K is the one you want.

yeag. i heard about that. releasing the 980ti maybe a fortnight. yeah maybe i will wait for that or wait for the r9 300 series. nothing against nvidia or amd but imma go with the 4690k. willing to wait for those cards.

It has ht which gives little performance over a non ht quad core in games. If you don't care about having a locked core cpu, get a locked i5 which is even cheaper than the 4690k and xeon. The xeon has no igpu (which matters little for gaming unless you just need a temporary backup if your discrete card fails and needs replaced), it's slower than an i7 (slower than the 4690k) but other than that, I guess it's like an i7.

Keep in mind, these are u.s. prices so availability and pricing where you're at could be different if you live elsewhere.

If all someone wants is a locked core cpu for gaming and looking at value, the xeon won't perform much if any better than the 4590 which is $50 cheaper. The i7 4790k does usually top the benchmarks for gaming, is a good deal more than the i5 - but the reason it benchmarks higher, it comes clocked at 4ghz (4.4 turbo) out of the box.

Personally I like having an igpu as a backup. I've had video cards give up the ghost and when it does the whole pc is a brick until a new one arrives. If the gpu goes out now all I have to do is plug my monitor into the mobo and all I have to go without is playing games until the new one arrives.

hmm the i5 4690k is the same price as the xeon. the 100$ more for the i7 4790k is not worth it so i guess imma go with the 4690k (i don't do video edting and such. just pure gaming and a little web surfing, that's all.). all i need now is a guide for overcloking.

maybe i will get a little more juice after a few years with the 4690k and overclock it then to be able to play more games in the years to come.

Cool, with the 4690k you could get your rig put together and play around with it until the new cards come out next month. Maybe read a bit on OCing your CPU, their are lots of guides available. You won't get a lot out of it with a 212 EVO but as you say down the road if/when you need more out of it you can always change that.

I don't think the 980Ti will move existing pricing around but the new AMD cards may. The two of interest are the re-branded Hawaii now called Granada and the Fiji. For you I think the Fiji will be the one to look at, depending on what it can do and what it cost. If it can land somewhere between the 980 and 980Ti performance wise and priced close to the 980 I think it will make NV lower prices on both. Would be nice to see the 980 under $500 and the 980Ti perhaps $under $700.

i have read some guides and forums about overclocking the cpus. still in between the i5 and i7, choosing between gigabyte gaming 7 or asus z97-a. i may get the 4690k if it can handle more games in years to come then oc it more if needed. stick with liquid or air cooling? i have an i5-3330 in my current rig and still able to hold after 2 years. i am building a new one. gpu, cpu, cooling, and mobo are the pieces of the puzzle.

i am not a fanboy of either green or red. i owned a green card and a red one, they work really fine (though red is struggling with their drivers). i can wait for both green and red new cards to arrive and look for benchmarks and reviews, pros and cons, fps and performance, and price. the 390/x card is said to be able to "kill" the titan and as for 980ti i think it will cut down the titan and have the 980 price lower. all i can do is wait for the result/performance of those cards

Intel Xeon E3-1231V3 is hyper threaded which will be useful in many games like battlefield 4 and crysis 3 which is uses the hyper threads and thus by hyper threading you will have more application run faster at the same time

Hard to say what July will look like but it's fun to try to tell the future. I can't see the 980Ti moving any pricing around, it falls in the middle of 980 and TX, closer to TX. NV said the base clock is the same as TX 1002, but no word on the boost clock, memory is clocked the same. I don't thing NV will do the same hat trick again like they did with the T Black and 780Ti, the $450 gap between them leaves room for it to fit nicely, most say around $799, I hope more like $750.

I hope the Fiji is a GREAT card to set NV back a bit, they need to gain back some market. I don't think it will match the TX but I hope it matches the 980Ti at a lower price, close to the $550 the 980 is now. If it can and they let it go for around $650 that just may make NV adjust their prices. We should know the whole story by the end of June when the dust has settled, should be interesting.

That along with Skylake and Z170 PCH's coming out shortly things are looking up, I understand some of the LGA 1151 CPU will support both LPDDR3 and DDR4, and offer 20 lanes of PCIe 3.0. I guess to handle all the new SSD hardware coming out. And to top it all off some USB 3.1 ports. Even the high rollers are getting a new chip set and socket, the 2017-A

yeah. middle of 980 and titan. 980Titan haha. if fiji did match the 980ti i will go for that given that it will perform better less power and heat and cheaper than 980ti. i do believe that the manufacturers are doing their own version of the r9 300 and 980ti giving and bringing out more juice out of the cards. but goddamn the r9 390x is a beast. if it is by numbers to numbers basis. well just wait and let them do whatever they want to the cards as long as it will be priced accordingly. not by the hype and other stuffs.

as for skylake, meh. overkill and not yet affordable given you need to upgrade your rig just to match it. still staying with the i5.

R9 390x WCE, sweet

These are billed as the real McCoy from AMD......very nice clean looking package. Looks like AMD is finally stepping up to the plate and making some decent looking reference coolers, I think the stuff they have made lately looks terrible compared to the NV factory coolers.
