You could be right, though $200 is not the same as 200 pounds, and if i do buy it now, i'll keep it for at least half a year or a longer.Though i dont think we'll see DX10 gaining ground that quickly, there will be games yes, but they wont become commonplace for another year or may be even longer than that. But if i decide not to build now, and i'm leaning towards that, all of this is will be irrelevant for me anyway.

Dont you need to have Vista installed in order to use DX10? I dont plan to put it in for some time, just because i dont want to struggle with the issues its having. May be there will be a way to use it without Vista?

You cannot use directx10 without vista. period

Thats what i thought, too bad.

Yeah stupid MS is trying to force everyone to buy the new OS by withholding features from XP. I already got Vista so I can begin working on cracking the DRM, and I'm already having quite a few problems.

I'm curious, what do you mean when you say trhat MS is withholding features from XP?

I mean they could easily release a directx 10 patch for xp, but they won't, that way you have to buy vista if you want directx10.

They have projected support until well past 2010, so it's not going to happen tommorow. Eventually though it will certainly be a thing of the past.

Listen, if you're not getting vista in the next 1-2 years... then a DX9 card is fine (although it will struggle to keep up with graphics).

The reality is that there will be only a few *exclusive* DX10 games (e.g. Halo 2)... most games will still support DX9 in the near future.

However, if your plan is to buy a card now just to flip once r600 comes out... then it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to skip on Nvidia cards or pay too much for a DX9.

If you want to stay ATI... I would just suck up poor graphics for the next 3-6 months and get a bottom end card that plays current games.

Then you can enjoy the eye candy once u install the r600 (heck, you may wind up replaying all your games just because the experience is so much better).

Flushing your money down the drain on Xfire DX9 is just not worth it... unless you don't really care about $200.

I am building once the Intel price cuts go into effect... I'm completely neutral on ATI and Nvidia. Whichever has the best DX10 card for the $ when I go to build... wins! Upgrade paths from there will be similar for both companies.

Although, on a side note, the AMD merger integration will affect product launches for ATI - happens with all mergers.

Most likely i will put off my build for a little while, just like you i too want to see Intel drop its prices, besides i can use this time to save a bit more cash and that way i can get better components since prices will drop and i'll have more money to spend and i'll have some time to think about the monitor as well. So if i start building, lets say 2 months from now, i'll do like you said, get a cheap card or get nothing at all cause by then r600 will be around the corner.
