OK, I need 3 parts,
RAM,
Mobo
hsf

What I have is
i5 3470s
Radeon 7770
480GB Crucial m500 SSD
RAID 1 1TB WDC
stand alone 500gb Seagate (anyone interested in buying? lol)
the usual optical drives
psu.... unsure... I'll have to check... I may need to upgrade that too. high efficiency preferred, I'm a pay more now, and make it back and then some later, type guy.

trying to keep it under 200 bucks
I've heard just get the lowest latency 1600mhz or higher ram from a quality brand.

Motherboard, other than a z77 I'm not sure what to get... and honestly my cpu isn't a K model so I'm not even sure I' really need a Z chipset. (Is there anyone who knows what "lake tiny" is beyond "some power savings optimizations"? I can't see even an unpowered SSD saving much electricity over a powered one... they don't use that much juice.)
My eye right this second is on the Asus Extreme 4 (which is somehow better than the 6 despite lower number) but i'm open and asking for other suggestions.

Looking for probably 8GB ram, I've been running just fine on 3gb for years and doubt more than doubling that will make a huge difference in the short/medium term.

The hsf, I'm totally open on, I don't yet know what size I'll have room for, but I know since my OC potential is pretty limited, I won't need a crazy good one.... though an oversized fan spinning slow and quiet would be of interest.

I don't upgrade often at all, except for the video card (bi to tri yearly, though last year I sold my 5770 on ebay for almost exactly what my new 7770 cost after rebate... If I can do that again, I will for sure!)

I'm moving up from a e2180 based on the original c2d. After mulling grabbing an e7600 (40-70% faster, fastest my gateway mobo supports) I decided to just build new, and get something likely a full 300% faster in the i5.

But I can see that lga1155 is at the end of its life (intel isn't making haswells for it right?) so the potential of replacing my i5 with a big step up K model in 5 years isn't that great. So I'll probably run whatever I buy until it can't handle the games anymore (what I did with my current setup) which is hopefully another 5 years and just replace the bare bones again like I'm doing here (CPU already bought yesterday though)
so I'm looking to be future-proof...ish...as it is, not upgradability other than, mobo should have 4 dimm slots, so I can just get 2 8's later and be in good shape with 24GB)
I say all that to ask -- unless I plan to upgrade the cpu later... which I probably don't cause it won't be a drastic change (not as much as my 2180 to 7600 would've been anyway) do I need a Z chipset or would I likely survive just fine with an H?
I haven't seen a huge price disparity though.

Of course I'll probably just get best bang for the buck when black Friday hits (thank you tiger and newegg for helping me clean up last year when I built a pc for my bro)

But I'd love to still have some options to specifically watch for, and if they get deep discounted, I'll pounce!

This is pretty good but I suggest waiting for Black Friday, NewEgg/TigerDirect/Amazon should have some good deals!

yeah that's the plan... I thought I had a i5 3470s on the way but the site I bought it from realized listing it at 101 dollars plus shipping was a mistake and probably isn't going to send it :(
