Current specs are a GTX 970 OC (+175 core clock OC and +325 memory clock OC) , i5 4690k (4.5ghz OC with watercooler) and 12 gb ram. I play at 1080p 144hz and struggle in some games to stay at 144fps+ i wanna upgrade my system to the point where i shouldn't have any problems reaching 144+ frames in most games at 1080p. Which temps me to just get a second hand 1080ti however at that point i'd probably need a newer generation processor and board that will fit that newer gen processor in order to fully benefit from such an upgrade. Perhaps though maybe just a gtx 1070 would make the cut, would i also perhaps benefit from upgrading my processor aswell? I generally play fps games competetiveishly (pubg, battlefield games, r6 siege, arma 3, rust, and other similar games) having a high as possible stable framerate is my goal preferable not dropping too far below 120-144 frames at 1080p.

Solution
If you want to save money 1070 is good
1080 is better
cpu wont matter so much, apart from in certain games
it would be a lot of money to spend for small improvement on what you have now.
Go with the 1070ti - everything else is fine
