I am looking for a used service to run Milestone Xprotect. it is a multicamera surveillance software program. In the past I have run this on fairly light hardware and it isnt too hard on the cpu but it will run 24-7

I am looking for a used Supermicro 1U server on Ebay. I like supermicro as I like there IMPI (remote management). I would like to keep it sub $300 not including harddrive.

I saw a lot of Xeon X servers in the $170 range but I believe they are power hungery. Going up a a bit I saw some 1u systems with various amounts of ram at $230 and E3-1220 at $290

I really like the E3-1220 as it is in a half depth chassis. Is the E3 a better/more efficient CPU? Is there other cpus that I should be looking at?

Those are really interesting at 10w.. however I dont think supermicro makes any 1u servers with them.

The best place to compare CPU's is http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

It will give you comparative scores, pricing, and also how many watts they run.

I don't know of any ultra low wattage Xeons. I think they range from around 45-130 watts depending on the number of cores and speed. (that's in a dual processor server) My 5670's run at a toasty 90 watts. lol
