I want to run 2 monitors from my laptop though only have 1 hdmi port would a usb3.0 to hdmi adapter allow me to run the displays in extended mode or would this not be possible this way

Solution
Yep you can do that easily. the ones I use most of the time are plugable ud-3900 though it will set you back $90 or about.. but that allows you to run 2 monitors from itself.
you can also go cheaper if you have a compatible computer to just add 1 HDMI port for cheaper https://www.amazon.com/Graphics-Converter-Multiple-Monitors-Compatible/dp/B07F37JXSJ but you also loose the usb port though

OH and both are like max of 1080P monitors at 60hz.. so if you have a ultawide (or 4K) you want to drive you have to get an different adapter that is closer to $150 top $200

there is even cheaper options https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FPPJJVM/ref=psdc_3015403011_t3_B07F37JXSJ like that one if all you need is 1 output.. I would probably go that way...

so by doing this would I be able to run one monitor through hdmi and one through the usb converter and run them in extended display mode

yes OR just plug both into the more expensive one and just have to plug in the USB then. but on teh cheaper option (I have only used the other UD-3900 and one other one that has 3 outputs and I have used many of those just an FYI for the company I work for).. the cheaper one it should work just fine.. I just have never used those personally.
