Ok, I am new here, and I am going to be upfront with you. I don't know anything about computers what-so-ever. I have a computer that I think should be fine for me, but I don't know if the price is good. This is the info on it:

802.11g/54g wireless networking standard
2.66GHz Intel Pentium 4

What would you expect to pay for something like this?
Another question... what the heck is the 802.11g/54g wireless networking standard?

For starters, are going to be playing games with this machine? If not your graphics card won't work well. What other types of apllications activities you have planned for this computer? That makes a big difference on what needs to go and what needs to stay. I'll catcha later, my mom is calling me.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!
 
Well before we can recommend anything <b>YOU</b> really need to sit down and work out
A. what do you want/need?
and
B. how much can you afford?

Wil you be doing occasional gaming?, regular? flat out hardcore gaming?
Or will you be goind rendering or divx making?

Your needs dictate what items you can cut back with and save money.

As for games, if I do play them they are going to be old, and not very advanced games, but I don't think I will be playing many games. It is a laptop. I will be doing mostly work related things. Only one 'puter.' Actually, if I can with that configuration, I may, but I highly doubt it.
 
well thats good as laptop graphical solutions are invarably less good than a desktop one.

lots of ram is a must, especially with windows.
512mb is good for laptops.
cpu speed it doesnt matter terribly, but it might be a better idea to get a P4-M.
THe mobile chips run cooler and the battery lasts longer.

Is that processor an easy to change? Because this laptop is sold like that, and I can't change anything. How expensive is it?
 
Cpu's are pretty much a part of the system.
to change them requires alot of effort and dismantling the laptop basically.

the 2.6 isnt bad, just wont run for quite as long. and run a bit warmer.

For laptops, the Mobility 7500C & Radeon 9000 mobilty are decent. If you want a mid-rage mobile graphics go for the Ti 4200 Go. If you wnat Hi-end Moble graphics go for the Mobility radeon 9600. I'd suggest the Mobility Radeon 9000 for playing your older games. It should be cheaper and will probably be able to handle newer games well as long as you reduce the setting in Half-Life 2 and other games with similar features.
