Upgraded to a ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 MOBO back in December, and now I'm looking for more RAM. I've noticed a lot of stuttering and lag skips and frame rate drops in the recent games I've been playing. Such as Arma 3, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and Mass Effect Andromeda. The stuttering make them nigh unplayable sometimes. Think it has to do with loading in large Open World maps. Mass Effect was working fine until I got to the first large planet, and its multiplayer runs well too. I have a GTX 960 GPU and a FX-8350 Black Edition CPU clocked at 4.0GHz. I have only 8GB of RAM that came with the PC when I bought it years ago. Its about the only part left that I haven't swapped out or upgraded. Is this potentially a RAM problem I'm having? And if so, where can I find a reasonably priced 8GB of RAM that is compatible with my board? My 2 sticks of RAM clock in at a DRAM Frequency of 668.9 ish each. Please Help, and thanks.

It could possibly be RAM in some cases but I think it's your CPU. The FX series has relatively poor single threaded CPU performance, which can lead to harsh frame dips even if the average FPS is still pretty high. If you want to check if it is a RAM issue download MSI afterburner and set it to monitor CPU usage, GPU usage, and RAM usage. If the RAM is just sitting at around 8gb then it's a RAM problem, if the CPU is sitting at ~90-100% the whole game it's your CPU, same for GPU (but I bet it's RAM or CPU). Here's a good RAM module for cheap if you just want to order one, make sure you have the slot for it:

Thanks for the tip. New to this PC thing, never used Afterburner before. Assuming I did this correctly, I made it track GPU Temp/Usage, CPU1 Temp, CPU1-8 Usage, CPU Usage, Memory Clock, Memory usage, and pagefile usage. What I found was, mostly the CPU cores stayed within the 65-85% range. Not too much variation there. RAM got to 8087, but stayed mostly around 6000-6500, but what I did find, was that for a good portion of my playtime in Mass Effect Andromeda, the GPU was at or close to 99% Usage. Don't know really what that means. GPU temp never got over 67 degrees C. The GPU would drop in Usage from around 99-98 all the way down to 22 in some cases. I figure those are the drops I see. But it would shoot back up to 90 and higher. I'll run some more tests, but what does this mean? That my GPU might be busted?

Your GPU definitely isn't busted, MEA is just a pretty GPU intensive game so your GPU most of the time is the bottleneck. Since your RAM got to 8087 and stayed pretty high then you might just want to order that stick if you want a little more RAM breathing room, I'm using 12gb right now and games like the Witcher 3 and Battlefield 1 will go over 8gb at least a couple times in long playthroughs. For the monitoring you don't really need to have memory clock or the temps if you're wanting to conserve graph space but it's up to you.

Thanks, thats a weight off my mind. But that still doesn't explain the crazy stutters. Is it because of my RAM or could there be another problem that I just don't see?
