Looking to build SFF PC - Rendering/Gaming

Hey guys,

It's been a few years since I built a PC so I thought I would come here for some advice.

I am looking for a small form factor machine (mostly it just needs to be portable because I am moving around), so I have been considering mini-itx and micro-atx. Primarily I will be using it for design and 3D rendering using CUDA.

GPU:
I have to stay with Nvidia for CUDA, currently have been looking at the 770 2 or 4gb model (VRAM has additional use in 3D rendering even when not in SLI), So I need a case which can house this, unless someone has better advice.

I believe this card means I need a 600W power supply too. I can't really go below this card, I need the CUDA Cores, so mostly I'm interested in advice on 2/4gb VRAM, or pushing up to the higher models/using SLI on lower cards.

Case:
I looked at the Prodigy M, which seems ideal, and even gives the flexibility of deciding ITX/ATX later, but I was wondering if anyone had a strong case for the ITX exclusive.

Other than that, I realise the Prodigy is rather large and thought perhaps someone had a much smaller ITX cases they could suggest, that wont compromise by other requirements.

MOBO:
I'm leaning towards the flexiblity of ATX, but if someone has a good argument for a small, capable ITX case and MOBO that supports the 770 I'm interested. A board which supports 2 PCI-e might be nice, as I would chuck my old 460 in then as well (GPU rendering can use cards not in SLI together).

RAM:
I need 16GB, more is nice but not requirement.

CPU:
Top end of the mid range, Intel.

Budget isn't too important. I don't really want to spend over $1400, but I can if I need to. I don't need monitors.

Anyway, thanks for any advice.

Solution
You really need something like this. Sorry about this is "bit" over budget.

ATX build can be done cheaper. Sure u can save bit with GTX 770.

I did try to save from this build but price is just too high for now.

Look good deals of parts.

Something like this you really need. Next drop is TX 650 Ti boost 2GB. About 100 save there. Maybe bit more. Here was 4B GTX 760.

Solution

Wow thanks for this reply, give me a bit of time to digest this all and I'll probably have some more questions.

Still welcome others ideas atm too.

Ok, had a bit of a look. The first two are a bit expensive, but I can shave some off them (I don't need 32gb RAM at the moment, nor do I need that exact CPU in a pinch). Other than that, it's rather what I expected so thanks! I have a couple of questions though.

You didn't recommend any ITX boards, is this just because price or you don't like them as much?

The 750 watt power supply in the first build was that to allow my other older 460 to use the second PCI-e x16 slot?

Would you agree with getting the 4GB RAM card, I understand its little use for gaming as one card, but better if I decide to SLI them later.

3D rendering needs 6 core cpu + lots of memory.
Here is cheap 2*4GB 2400MHz memory. You need two kits because X-79 is using quad memory controller.

ITX do not have any upgrade room. ATX is best choice foryou.
Not best because you move build alot. But best for future upgrades. mATX is better but exxpensive.

Yes. But just tell before you push buy button and wecan look better bigger psu. 850w is good buy. Just look sale 850-1000w psu.
Rosewill goldpu arereally god quality , good efficiency and really reliable unit. Cappstone + Lightning are best choice.
Seasonic ( XFX) and Corsairare good. But do not look cheapest corsair. They are not so good. Not so reliable units.

Video card? Not sure if you really need one. 4GB gives benefit if monitor is big resolution + you want to use all eye candy.
And this depens games what you play. How they work with 4GB ram.

Hope this helps :)
