first of all, im thinking of the liteon 8x..
What do the formats +rw and -rw mean?
All i wish to do is copy movies i rent, and by rent i mean buy. Do i need special software for this? and is the quality as good as buying the dvd?

Yes, you'll need extra software.

I prefer using DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink (which works very well if you already have Nero installed on the system.) I also like using an AnyDVD driver while ripping the files, to speed up the decrypting process and remove features like Region Codes and other extraneous items.

Elby's CloneDVD also works very well, although it doesn't give you the same control over compression levels that comes with the DVDShrink tools. But it's a good program; extremely easy to use, especially in combination with AnyDVD. There's no problem when using this to remove subtitle tracks and extra audio in different languages that isn't needed. It rips and burns, without leaving a mess behind, and a separate burning program isn't required to create a disk copy.

CloneDVD 2.2 (not to be confused with Elby's version) also does a good job, but lacks many features. However, it will make perfect 1:1 copies.

With any of these programs, (and there are many more on the market, with another example being DVD X Copy) it is possible to make copies that are every bit as good as the original disk. It really depends on how many disks you are willing to use, and what compression level you choose. DVDShrink can do things like have different compression levels per chapter, and make the starting and ending credits into still frames, which saves on disk space, for example.

I just sent a zipped folder of DVD Favorites to your e-mail address that you might find useful.

Extra: DVDShrink Guides.

Hey,
More info in your post than I found in hours trying to figure DVD burning software out......

Could you send me that email? I would really appreciate it.

About burners, I want a combo drive....maybe the Plexor

What about NERO, is it OEM...doubtful...what is the best version and source to purchase it..........saw it at Amazon, Nero 6 (?)......about 80.00..is that the one your were talking about.....is it better or worse or indifferent when you compare it to DVD X copy......

I m using a Celleron based (around 700 mg) HP, but am trying to learn enough to put together a new tower.....Thanks,

MR
