After upgrading to a 144hz monitor I have started noticing that in less intensive games like Overwatch and CSGO I can easily get 144fps and get full benefit of the monitor and get a very smooth and satisfying experience. But in most of the new games such as Apex Legends and Modern Warfare my rig is only capable of running them at 80-100 FPS even on the lowest settings and messing with the config files as well as reducing Render resolution in them does not help much.

I feel like in my current setup, upgrading my GPU would be ideal, but I am unsure which GPU to buy and would really appreciate help for that. I am currently on a budget and not able to upgrade multiple things, so I would prefer a GPU that would suit my current setup:

PC Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700
GPU: AMD R9 390
RAM: 16GB Samsung M378A1G43DB0-CPB 2x8GB
MBD: Asus PRIME B250M-A
PSU: 750W
Monitor: Acer KG251Q Freesync

Tough choice between the 2060 and 5600, they perform similar in benchmarks. One might beat the other by a few fps then all of a sudden trade blows. It depends on the game.

---

2060 also trades blows with the 1080 in some games. Give or take a few fps, 1080, 2060 and 5600 are pretty close.

It's a pickle no doubt about it and as said tough choices being that they all perform about the same. It'll come down to price and perhaps driver optimisations for the games you play (Difficult to know). That could be some homework to figure out.

A new GTX 1080 shouldn't be cheaper than the 2060 unless...

Approx 30fps difference between low and high preset so if were to play low you'd probably see the 2060 reaching close to 140. 2070 or higher would be ideal though.

Keep in mind, the cpu plays a big role in supplying the graphics card frames to render so you'll probably find the cpu reaching high usage levels especially in multiplayer and cause for potential stutters. If were to buy a graphics card now with possibly a cpu upgrade in future, you can always up the graphics or limit fps to a level where the cpu better copes.

Thank you a bunch for the recommendations.
Currently I am looking at the following GPUs:
I am confused how the GTX 1080 is much older than the RTX 2060, as well as cheaper and performs better. If I had a choice between those two, should I got with the GTX 1080?
I am especially considering the RX 5600-XT as it performs way better than my current GPU as well as much cheaper. This way I can purchase it and already be half way at saving up for a newer CPU as well. What do you think?

A new GTX 1080 shouldn't be cheaper than the 2060 unless second hand. Nvidia don't make 10 series anymore so there's no legitimate RSP for this model any longer and could be a store trying to sell old inventory. Wouldn't worry anyhow, 1080 might perform a little better in some titles, but it's only marginally. But, if you can grab the 1080 for a good price, there's definitely no problem there.

I'd go Nvidia personally. Drivers just seem to be less hassle.

Regarding cpu, best you can do for your system is an i7 7700 or 7700K with compatible bios version. I wouldn't bother though because if you couldn't find a good price used (if you want used), a new i7 7700 can sell for almost $400. Can set you up on a decent Ryzen system, cpu + mobo for that much.

I reckon see how you go with a gpu upgrade and go from there.

Thank you very much once again, I will definitely be on the look out for the GTX 1080 and see if I can find it cheap, if not I might have to go with the 5600 instead. Thanks again!
