Get the Windows 7 ISO here:

Burn to DVD and go for it. Activate with your existing key.
Be sure you download the same version that is currently installed.

He may want to go to the website that sales his laptop first and download and save all his drivers for his laptop as well on a thumb drive. IE - dell hp Toshiba- ect ect
