Looking to upgrade an old CPU...

Hello all,

After going through some old boxes, I came across an old laptop. I fired it up, and it surprisingly still works. I wiped the hard drive, reinstalled Windows, and got the computer ready for everyday use.

Although the laptop is pretty irrelevant (I have a $1,000 home-built gaming PC) I was looking to get some use out of it as a web browser/media center. One slight issue, though- it has a Intel Pentium T2310, which is really slow. I would be wiling to spend from 30-50 dollars to upgrade the CPU, just as a side project kind of thing. Would that CPU be compatible with my laptop? If not, what processor would work within my budget? Thank you ahead of time!

P.S. I understand this laptop is really outdated and all, but I am kind of just looking for something to do, so please do not recommend me buying a new laptop, because as stated above, I already have an exceptionally powerful desktop computer.

No you cant put that processor in. Its not easy to find out the upgrade options with laptops as they use different sockets, and many just solder the CPU to the board, making upgrading impossible.

I would suggest putting a SSD in it - makes a remarkable difference in speed and responsiveness even in older laptops.

It probably wouldn't make a huge difference to upgrade the CPU and besides that your laptop might not be equipped to cool a different CPU. What I suggest is more RAM. Windows Vista needs 1GB for itself and if you just have 1GB installed then your computer will definitely run sluggishly. The Max RAM for the laptop is 2GB.
