Hi I am trying to figure out either should I upgrade my Current PC, because I purchased a new Ryzen 7 9800x3d Chip, or should I just build a new PC (In Signature is my current build)

Here is what my current computer is using a
i9 9900KS - CPU
Asus ROG STRIX GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER - Video Card
Asus ROG Maximus Xi HERO (Wi-Fi) ATX LGA1151 - MOBO
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 - RAM
Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ - PSU

Here is the Current Pc Part Picker of my current system
Current Build - Nov 14 2024

This current PC I am on was my first PC I ever built and I have to say it has been really good. I had to just replace my Video card since my 2080 TI died and so I have been looking to upgrade or potential build a new pc. I think I can use the m.2 Storages on my current system for the new 9800x3d But I do believe I would have to replace the PSU, CPU, Ram, and MOBO. I wouldn't be against replacing the Case either but I would want a Mid Tower case with no Transparent sides and with a lot of room for airflow.

It would be nice to save money by reusing the parts I already got but I do know for a fact I need to replace the Motherboard for the new chip.

Any ideas? I am open to any conversations and I got some time since my chip won't be coming in til January 2025 but I wanted to see what I could put together. My main use for my PC is gaming/talking on Discord/Streaming through Discord and also I just do general computing.

Thank you for your time. I put together a parts idea below as to maybe what I am thinking on building.

I am looking into building potentially this

CPU/Motherboard/RAM should be all that is needed to change here.

PSU is enough and not old yet, no reason to swap it out. I have the 2016 model and it is still working.

I should add you may need to get the AM5 mounting kit for your cooler. You can request one from Noctua for free. They also sell them on Amazon and other etailers if you want it faster. Since you have the time, having one sent to you is the way to go.

I was looking into replacing the cooler as well for the Deepcool AK500 DIGITAL 68.99 CFM CPU Cooler but I would have to see if my Noctura NH15 Came with an AMD Mount in the box which I am pretty sure it did.

My current system has two intake fans and two exhaust fans on top of the fans on GPU and the PSU Fan because I was always worried about heat. Currently when I am playing some games like The First Descendant on Steam I would notice my current i9 9900Ks would be running CPU Temperature of 97-100% since I replaced my 2080 ti with the new 4070 Ti Super so I wanted to make sure it was getting efficent cooling.

My friends tell me it is fine that some games will be running your CPU hard over GPU but I am still kind of learning.

399 is a bit much, I would certainly review the motherboard features to see what you really need.

Some decent X870 boards out there. E boards have dual chipsets for a lot of I/O, but if you are just going with GPU and some M.2 drives you can save a lot of money.

Any recommendations on motherboards?

I don't mind spending a little bit more for an more up to date board with potential of adding a 5090 when they come out. I know I would need to get a 1200 PSU if I went that route which I will go if I end up pulling the trigger when the 5090 comes out but I think I won't do that for awhile. Also seeking x3 m.2 Slots on mobo and I definatly want to avoid Gigabyte since I keep hearing nothing but terrible things from those boards.

So right now looks like I am replacing Mobo/RAM for sure.

You could use a 5 year old board and still install a 5090, all you need is an appropriate PCIe slot.

1200W is not strictly necessary for a 5090. Even if they build it to pull 500-600W out of the box, a good 1000W unit should be fine.

Nothing wrong with Gigabyte that I am aware of. Really only like 4 main motherboard suppliers these days. ASUS, ASRock, MSI, Gigabyte. Then smaller brands like NZXT who uses someone else to make the boards anyway, and then more niche things like Supermicro. Pretty much everyone else has shutdown making newer boards. Zotac surprises me, they used to make some nice bargain stripped down MicroATX boards. Given they still make Nvidia cards, seems odd.

I just don't know what kind of mobo I need but the Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING I think is the one I am going for.

I am going to reuse my current x2 m.2 990 Pro one has the Windows 10 Pro on it and I might purchase a 4tb m.2 for my last m.2 slot just never a problem to have more storage...I might even buy a faster m.2 drive that is a little bigger to replace my current 1tb one. I always find the m.2 drive screws to be painfully hard to unscrew without stripping on the two boards I had so I hope this isn't an issue but it is what it is.

::UPDATED EDIT Nov 18 2024::
Also as a followup I found my Noctura NH-D15 Chroma black box and found It comes with a AMD NM-AMB8 Mounting kit but I don't know if that is compatible with the new AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D.

I went to the website and posted my dates when I purchased the Noctura NH-D15 Chroma from Dec 2019 & my most recent purchase for the new 9800x3d just waiting to see if they will send it free of charge for the mounting kit.

I just want to say thank you for recommending on contacting Noctura about getting a Free Mount kit for AM5...They okied me and it got shipped out today with no added charge.

I bought my Noctura D15 back in 2019 and my new CPU This November and they honored it.

Lifetime, so you can even order again if there are new sockets released later on. One of the reasons they are so expensive.

Seems worth it to me. It is minor I know the mount but it is nice to know I can continue use my Noctura NH-D15 for the new chip. I read a lot of reviews on other coolers and It seems like it is a really solid one and I bought it Five years ago and the Lifetime is a very nice thing I didn't even know.

Thank you again. I am still looking into Mobos. I might be trying out an MSI Board. I have always enjoyed Asus but it sounds like their customer service has gotten worse from some reviews. I just don't know what I need aside from x3-x4 m.2 Slots, and like a ton of USB's in back I am currently using an Asus Maximus Hero XI (Wifi) board and I really like it. Easy to use and the BIOS update was a breeze.

I am mainly looking for a Mobo that will last a long while will flexability of slots and room for my mid tower case.

isn't the AsRock x670E Steel Legend Discontinued? When it comes to Mobos I am looking over all these boards and not quite sure what I need aside from x3-x4 m.2 Drives that are easy to access and flexability of adding stuff for future. As long as it has the same amount of USB or More then my current board and can handle the Ryzen 7 9800x3D I am good.

Also with the m.2 slots the screws ALWAYS seem overly tight and hard to get out from the last three mobos I owned in the past few years. Also I can careless about RGB on my Mobos.. I don't want a disco in my computer which is why I went for my closed non-Transparent Case. I dislike RGB Quite a bit and always turn it off.

Considering the placement of M.2 drives, pretty always going to be one blocked by the GPU.

Nothing wrong with a discontinued motherboard, as long as the price is right.

X670E Steel Legend is pretty expensive. Does have two of the M.2 slots pretty far away from the GPU, so those are accessible. The one under the GPU, no heatsink.

Disadvantage with this Gigabyte is that they have a single heatsink under the GPU for several of the drives, so that is more inconvenient:

This one is more accessible, but the last one doesn't have a heatsink, but is in a place where adding one isn't too bothersome:

I am still looking..

Looks like I will need to update the Bios to put in a Ryzen 7 9800x3d. So I guess now I need x5 USBs, x3 M.2 Slots, BIOS Flashback I think it is called, on any mobo I am going to buy. The lingo is so confusing. I keep reading several mobos and not sure what to get still I am reading the recommendations but I just want to pop in my new CPU put on the new mount for AMD Noctura D15 cooler pop in new ram and put in my video card and hit power and get going.

Like I read something has PCIE x2 m.2 drives and I am like what is that a PCI Express slot with an M.2 Slot? Also easy to work with would be nice having clearance for my Ram under my Noctura cooler.

I was looking into these..

MSI x670E Mag Tomahawk Wifi but I think it only has x2 m.2 Slots

ASRock X870 Steel Legend WiFi 7 AMD Ryzen Socket AM5

Wondering how many days it took for that free mount Noctua sent you...from your first contact with them to arrival in your mailbox?

I may have to do that myself.

I assume it came from Austria to the US and you were required to send them an invoice or picture of your AMD CPU?
It says it will be arriving Nov 26th and I got the email on Nov 19th. So not that long actually. I sent them a picture from Amazon from 2019 I showed order and they okied it with the new CPU chip I purchased in early Nov
