I've had this mobo for about 8 years now, I think it's time for a new one. I'd like to gather some informed opinions on what to get but first and foremost, is it really that important to upgrade and will it actually be an upgrade? I'm not sure how far mobos have come since I bought this one.

There's no point upgrading the motherboard without also upgrading the CPU - hence why when you talked about upgrading the motherboard I just assumed you meant mobo + cpu

Replacing a working motherboard with another motherboard on the same socket would be a lot of expense and time (you would probably have to reinstall windows) and the performance difference would be near zero.

Thanks for the correction on how old it is 😛

Well, I use 3d modeling software like Maya. I also do work in Photoshop, FL Studio, Unity3D etc.
I've got two ASUS MX299Q monitors that I do this work with.

So you're basically saying I can wait a few more years before worrying about the mobo? How long of a life do they usually have?

I wouldn't be overly concerned with it failing, boards can last a very long time tbh

Based on your usage i think an upgrade to an amd ryzen system plus a solid state hard drive (ssd) would be a really decent jump in performance. An 8 core ryzen 7 1700 or even a 6 core ryzen 5 1600 would stomp the i5 in rendering and modelling. Depends what you can afford :)

I'll look into them. :) I've an ssd atm. Sometimes when I boot my comp up it does a chkdsk for some reason. I also get memory related BSODs often. I've done diagnostics on both and they seem to be fine. So I thought it may be the mobo but there's no way to know for sure without replacing parts

Hey, thanks for being so helpful Luco.
I'm going with the CPU you mentioned here soon,
so back to the origin but with a new twist;
which mobo would compliment that Ryzen 7? I appreciate you corresponding with me.
