Looking to Upgrade (GPU?)

So, I just bought the new Ryzen 1800X but it didn't really do much as far as performance goes while gaming. I was running the AMD FX-8350 Black edition before. Not much improvement that I can see while gaming. I use a dual monitor setup at 1440p, I know that its a little more intense than 1080p gaming but it looks really good. Anyways.

To the point. I currently have an R9 390 8G card from MSI. I bought it when it first came out and it does very well but I'm looking to maybe upgrade to the GTX 1080 or something to boost performance even more. Don't know much about specs when it comes to GPU's so I wanted to see if anyone had some input for me. I'm not even sure if my current card is a good competitor with the GTX 1080. Never really used Nvidia cards so trying to get a little clarity.

A 1080 should blow that 390 out of the water, if I'm not mistaken. I'd say go for it...at the moment, AMD doesn't have a desktop video card to match the 1080.

That's what I was thinking but I'm not familiar with Nvidia so I wanted to make sure.

I've got a 1700x and a GTX 1080 and man oh man is gaming sweet with those 2 together. 1440p is GPU bound so you'll definitely see a huge jump in FPS. I wish I could give you some solid numbers but I've only played 1 recently released game at 1440p and that's ME: Andromeda. I'm getting an average of around 90fps at 1440p Ultra settings if that helps you any.

Nice, thats good to know. And yeah it really helps to see some numbers so that is pretty helpful! 😀

I think AMD missed a huge opportunity to gain back some GPU market share by releasing Vega later this year. I know I would have given it some thought as long as it had the power of a 1080 when I built my system. The problem for AMD now is all those new systems built with Ryzen most likely have an Nvidia card in them because of the power gap.
