Looking to upgrade my CPU

So I currently have an i5-4690K CPU overclocked upto 4.2ghz, i was looking to upgrade as I do alot of editing and gaming. Is an i7, for example the 6700k with only 4ghz still better than my current cpu even though it has a lower ghz, and what other specs should i look at when choosing a CPU. Also if you have any suggestions on an upgrade please leave them, however i would like to stick with Intel processors.

if you were to upgrade to a 6700k, difference in singe threaded game would be minimal, but there would be a good 30% bonus in multi threaded performance. Understand the differences in Haswel and Skylake architecture and how well cores interact and communicate, like how bulldozer is just faildozer because of it. level 3 cache increases communication but is slower and such. if you have trouble comparing, the only I trust is www.cpu-world.com
but I would stay away from sites using synthetic benchmarks. I would recommend just to wait for next gen intel now cause its good to wait 2 gens before upgrading. you wont get much out of gaming if you were to upgrade anyways. not worth the money. 4690k is still very capable processor, just not as good as 6700k

Choosing a right CPU is not an easy choice but you should look at other things than clock speed when you are looking for a CPU. The best way to find your perfect CPU is to look at benchmarks and especially real-life benchmarks. Core Clocks, Number of cores, Locked frequency and lots of other factors affect the performance of a CPU.

I would recommend something like the Xeon 1231v3 if you have a graphic card. (Note that this CPU doesn't have an integrated graphic processor). The Xeon's clock speed is locked which means you won't be able to overclock (You could try a BLCK Overclock which I don't recommend...). Editing and gaming will be smooth with this CPU. And another note, the 1231v3 doesn't come with an cooler so you will have to buy your own. Xeon's are basically an i7 without the igp making them cooler and cheaper than other options like i7s.

With a higher budget and the will to overclock, you could get something like a i7 4790k, a very performant CPU. But then, overclocking could get a little more performance from your CPU.

The 6700k is not an option for you because your motherboard could not not support it. You would need a Z170 board to support DDR4 and newer Skylake CPUs. Note however, that the performance improvement you get from skylake is minimal.

EDIT: The 4690k is still very capable these days for gaming but lacks of performance in editing and cpu-world is not the best web site for comparing CPUs.
