Hey guys,

I currently have a P8Z68-V motherboard, 16GB Ram, R9 290 Video Card and when I'm streaming I'm getting bottlenecked. I think it's my CPU i5-2500k but I'm not sure, regardless there are times my CPU is at 100% on multiple different games so I'm wondering what the best 1155 processor is or if there's a better/different combo that I could upgrade to in order to get better performance?

-D

Solution
you could likely use an i7 2600 with your current MB but I wouldn't recommend it. if you want to stream and game I would go with a ryzen 3600 or higher CPU due to the higher core/thread count. The 2500k is a great chip it just is really starting to show its age with modern games and applications

yeah I loved my i5-2500k up until recently, games like PoE ect really eat up a lot of CPU. So you would recommend a complete MoBo swap to acomodate what I Want to do? I was looking at the i7-2700k (500$+ CAD) but I'll look at a complete mobo/cpu swap out here... I feel like amd cpus are winning the game right now.

It looks like an i7 2600k can be had for 80-100. But that being the case, I also recommend a new system. Depending on budget, maybe get a 2600 or 2600x and decent board along with 16gb of ram. That would get you on a new platform. Then when the new ryzen 4000 series comes out you could grab one of those and sell the 2600.

So I would need new ram as well hey? I just upgraded to 16GB thinking that would alleviate some of my problems... Hm. So the only thing I would really be able to keep would be my R9 290, the rest would have to be changed... So if that's the case, what would you guys recommend as a whole? This rig has lasted me 6~ years or so, I don't mind spending the money on upgrading just really would want to spend wisely. I know the R9 290 is still a really decent card so I don't need to upgrade that.

I haven't done a new build or even looked at new chipsets/mobos or ram in over 6 years which is why I'm asking for a little bit of assistance. :)

Yeah you would need a new one. Well it depends now on you what you would like to build. For the chipset, try going with a Ryzen series. And a Ryzen compatible MoBo.

If you JUST upgraded to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, then I'd really start looking for a good deal on the Intel Core I7-3700/3700K.

3770k all the way--the prices for these are well under $100 (near $75) if you look carefully and the extra cores and higher single thread performance should keep you going for a bit. If you bump it up with a slight overclock, you're in even better shape:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-3770K-vs-Intel-i5-2500K-vs-Intel-i7-2600K/2vs804vs868

If you've got a budget to go with something new, you can do that too, but that's a big change that costs a lot more money. The 3770k drop in would be 10 minutes and then you're back to enjoying it.

Where do you guys find these processors so cheap?

I7-3770K is 630 on amazon, 330 Used

Edit : Also, i'm looking at differences between i5-2500k and i7-3770k and I'm reading that it's literally a 7% increase in performance.

hardwareswap is also a great place to check.

The single thread performance isn't that much of a difference, but still about 10% or so:
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/575/Intel_Core_i5_i5-2500K_vs_Intel_Core_i7_i7-3770K.html

The big difference is the hyperthreading and the faster memory access (if you have faster memory or oc it).

When you have a lot of stuff going on like what the os is always doing, the hyperthreading will help with that and bring that cpu utilization down from nailed 100%.

I would try to find a 3770 but also key an eye out on eBay for cheaper newer systems sometimes you can score a steal but you gotta pay really close attention and do your reasearch. I’ve built many systems for less than 100$ just by finding motherboard cpu combos that people are just getting rid of and don’t care how much they get for it really.

I'm not really worried about the money though too be honest, if I can spend say 600~ price shopping and get a huge upgrade vs spending 100~ and get a 10% upgrade, I'd rather spend the 600. I will try to price shop a 3770 in the mean time though, how do I know if I'm getting a "good deal" or a dud? Simply reviews?

Check EBay completed deals for the Intel Core I7-3770 and Intel Core I7-3770K. That will give you an idea about how much used processors are going for. If you find a processor in that price range, then check the sellers ratings. If the seller has less than a couple hundred reviews and less than 5 stars, move on.

Basicly if it’s too cheap or has sketchy pictures run away lol. Also if that’s the case you can get a b450 motherboard and a 2700x fairly cheap right now and just add 16gb of ddr4 that’s atleast 3000mhz you can probably use the same powersupply but if you think it’s getting long in the tooth perhaps upgrade to a EVGA supernova or Seasonic platinum. Maybe get a ssd

That’s a good system but if he needs a ssd cuz he’s running on a hard drive and a new psu that’s gonna drive cost of a decent bit

I have* 2 500GB SSDs & a Seasonic X-660 PSU, R9 290 at present. I don't think I would need to upgrade any of that.

What kind of performance difference would I see between that ryzen and my i5-2500k or the 3770?
