Hello everyone, i am looking for some help upgrading my pc. I built it in 2010 for around 500$ and was given a gfx card by a friend when he upgraded his. I currently play overwatch, mobas, some world of warcraft and will look at new mmos as they release so i want to be able to run some newer games. Currently it sounds like my hd is constantly grinding and has trouble even opening firefox sometimes if anything else is running, even on a clean restart it will take 10-20 seconds to open the browser. In overwatch my frames arent great but i can run the game on low-mid settings and play, i just have load delay on new maps or hero swaps 5~seconds or so. I have a 7+ score on windows rating for everything except HD right now which is 5.9, so im not sure if my hd is going bad or not.

I am looking for a decent ssd but am not sure if my hd is the problem yet.

I have been looking at getting 2x4g gskill sniper or ripjaw 1600mhz 9-9-9 ram and currently have 1333 8-8-8 corsair xms3(model isnt avaliable anymore i guess). Ive been told adding new ram to my current setup might not work, will 8g of new sticks alone run games well enough?

As for gfx cards i have been looking at 1060 6g, rx 460, rx 580. Id like to get somethimg that will last a bit but also not go much over 200$ if possible.
If the problem lies elsewhere or if the pc is to old to bother upgrading im open to budget builds if anyone has advice.

Currently everything is running at stock settings im not sure if OCing would help either i have decent case fans but stock cpu and gpu, though my mobo has quickboost ive never tried it.

Help me decide which components need an upgrade.

I'd recommend going for a new build judging by the age. Your Performance and speed issues would be a combination of a old CPU, low amount of RAM, weak and outdated GPU and if you are upgrading all these i would chuck in a new PSU since that one is pushing 7-8 years now. What kind of budget are we talking though? This would be a nice build, just re-use your Case and HDD for bulk storage, these components would make for a very fast system and perfect for Gaming in 1080p 60 FPS High/Ultra settings (even more in games like Overwatch and MOBAs).

Solution
Currently im unable to afford a whole new pc i have around 250$ left that i was hoping to use for upgrades, and eventually take the gpu, hdd, case and such to a new build next year maybe? I hate to buy ddr3 ram now since it will be wasted on a new pc but currently I get so angry at my slow pc i need something to help until i save more money. So id like to do some small upgrades now, Ssd, gpu, new hd maybe and take them to future builds.

I have been told my low ram and hd may be the problem. Is there a way to test and see if my hd is going bad, the cpu ran so well a few years back, ive thought about putting everything on my external and formatting even. I just recently upgraded to a 1080p monitor. Hd has 80g free of 1tb. Nothing else has changed. Ive never oced anything, its super clean, what could cause such large performance drops? can pull a 500g Seagate from an older pc i think if needed. Also can i use my windows 7 cd and key on a new pc if i build one, or is the free windows 10 still avaliable and is it even better than 7 for my old pc?

Try running this it'll put a test on your Graphics card, CPU, RAM, Storage and rate them against others of the same type and typical rating overall, good to see if something is a severe let down in the system only takes about 60 seconds to complete > http://www.userbenchmark.com/Software.

You can indeed use other HDDs from other systems provided you have the SATA ports to hold them all. Windows 10 isn't free anymore sadly, the free upgrade was only for 1 year on it's release which is already past but nothing wrong with Windows 7, if building a new system though as far as i know you can get Windows keys online (legally i might add) for around $40 but i'll need someone to clarify where from since i have never been on the site and done this before. Better than buying a retail edition for $80+.

I wasnt sure if windows 10 was going to be better than 7 or if it would be more of a strain on older systems. I had the option on my slow slow laptop and this pc. I was thinking of running a benchmark the other day but i read somewhere it could be a bad idea on older systems since it puts stress on the hardware, and could kill any potentially dieing parts. Is this true or is it safe to run? I need some way to see if my parts are going bad for sure. I just read about seagate drive diagnostic, i will try running it soon

This should be perfectly safe, it's quick and more a test than a full-on benchmark. Only thing that will get a minor push in the GPU but the test is so quick i doubt it would make it enough to get it firing up temps and stress. It's not a huge gaming benchmark or stress tester just a basic tool and i would very highly doubt it could cause any damage.

Ok i will get back to you once i run the benchmark and diagnostic. As for gpus what is the best performance for the money around the 200$ or less range. I know anything i get right now will be 3 to 4 times stronger than mynhd 5850. And would over clocking help or be an option with stock gpu and cpu fans? I think my case has decent fan/airflow what program can check idle/ gaming temps for me.

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/tyNypg/gigabyte-radeon-rx-570-4gb-gaming-4g-video-card-gv-rx570gaming-4gd. This would be plenty for your needs, enough to run Overwatch and MOBAs at High/Ultra settings in 60+ FPS easy. My only concern would be your CPU bottlenecking it in most cases, but either way it'll be a great card if you upgrade then at least you have something already capable of your Gaming needs. You could Overclock but i wouldn't bother just because of the age of the system and putting more stress on the already old Power Supply and CPU.

Finally i'll just point out you can actually squeeze a RX 580 within your $200 GPU budget. Although an RX 570 is easily enough for the games you mentioned, this is obviously more power and will last you longer in turn (if you go over to $225 you can get an 8GB if you really want to push many, many years out of the card). But the choice is yours > https://pcpartpicker.com/product/q8cMnQ/gigabyte-radeon-rx-580-4gb-gaming-4g-video-card-gv-rx580gaming-4gd.

I ran the seagate drive diagnostic on every option and its doing a long read now, everything has came back pass sofar. Still not sure why it grinds so much while just hanging out on desktop or doing easy tasks.

I looked at the gpus again and a 580 looks good, how does it compare to the 1060 gforce? Also what is the difference in the company that makes them if any? Not sure which card is best.

I also just noticed my specs list said i was using 8g of ddr3 that is wrong i have 2x2g for 4g total

The GTX 1060 and RX 580 are pretty similar, i'll link this just scroll down a bit and you'll see everything explained between the two so you can decide which would be better for you > http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3401038/gtx-1060-580.html.

As for your current issue, i do strongly suggest you do the UserBenchmark software, it may point out a simple problem in your build like something not being set up correctly or speeds might be lower than it should be for example.

Ok ill run the benchmark when i get back home. would a format help or is there a way to see if i have any software problems such as corrupt files or drivers or would that effect my speeds?

It can help if your drive is full of cluster and corrupt files so i would give it a go if you have got the files you need on it backed up elsewhere. I wouldn't expect a miracle but it can indeed give the drive a little boost it if does have a few issues.

Ahh main reason for that appears to be because your running it on SATA 2 whereas the drive supports and would run faster on SATA 3 hence it is under performing vs others of the same type. Not much you can do about this since your Motherboard is SATA 2. Regardless, if you have all the important files backed up i would suggest doing a fresh format on the drive to squeeze out more performance until you have a chance to upgrade it. I mean at this point i would just recommend grabbing a Pentium G4560 + B250 Motherboard + 8GB DDR4 + 1TB WD Caviar Blue (SATA 3) for ~$200 and be done with it for now. The CPU is stronger and the onboard Intel HD Graphics 530 actually outperforms your old Radeon HD 5850 as far as i know. And supports the latest APIs like Vulkan. 8GB DDR4 would be both faster and a good capacity. The WD Caviar Blue is a cheap yet very well performing Hard Drive which is also on the SATA 3 interface. Let me know what you think. :)

A friend of mine knew someone with a pc for sell if im going to pick up alot of parts ill see what he has avaliable in the build hes selling and see if we can do anything with it. I think he wants 500~. Thank you for such quick replys all of these seem like valid options. I guess for now i will look at backing up hd and maybe a format. On a fresh reboot i can play overwatch so im not in a huge rush yet. I just wish i kew what happened in the past year to make my pc so slugish outside of games even. Ill try to get back to you later tonight if i can.

Alright, good luck!

With the guy wanting ~500, feel free to rather post here or PM me on Tom's if you need any help with looking evaluating the parts and worth. :)

GTX 970, 16gb RAM, i5 4690k
I think that's the right processor's.

Is all he has sent me in a text msg sofar. Im trying to get full spec or see if i can set the cpu up and give it a test run. I think he said a monitor came with it which already sounds like a good deal for 500~$

Sounds pretty fair, this is also with the Motherboard i imagine?
