Loop Configuring WinUpdate

Now I have another problem. When I start the computer I get a message that windows is configuring updates and it is stuck at 35%. I have tried to restart computer with System Repair Disk but Bios is not recognizing the disk and each time it restarts it goes back to the configuring updates 35% do not shut down computer.

Try booting Windows 7 in Safe Mode with Networking to see if the update will resume and complete.

Is there any disk drive activity happening when it appears to be stuck in this update?

Thank you for your prompt response! I did finally get to safe mode and I found the one restore point after deleting all of the others to repair the backup problem. The computer is in the process of restoring and if that works I am home free. If not, I will be back. You are saving my life! This is my husband's computer and I will have to move out today if it is not fixed! That is not a LOL! Thanks.
