Hey guys I've been troubleshooting this issue for two days now, need some help. As the title says; I've made sure my games aren't muted, reinstalled realtek drivers, changed output sources, ...restarted the computer..., verified game cache, so on so on.

I thought it was just for steam games, but it happens in Origin, Uplay, and Minecraft as well. Twice now loading the defaults in UEFI bios has temporarily fixed it., but it doesn't work every time.

Haven't changed anything, have the latest updates for everything, and i don't have a virus.

(That should cover all the typical questions?)

Any similar cases or help?

Here's my rig if you have questions about it:

Welp, reinstalled windows with a system image, so i didn't lose any of my data..... that wasn't it.

It was my goddamned Nvidia shield controller i use to play games with. I confirmed; when it's plugged in, no sound, unplugged, sound.
10/10 Nvidia you were the chosen one. I guess i'll stick with KB&M now....

Thanks for the help anyways!
What are your speakers? Does it have a button to toggle surround and stereo?

My Logitech x540s come with a volume controller with other functions like stereo to use all speakers. If i have Windows set to 5.1 but forget to turn off stereo button, i wont hear some sounds in games that are configured for surround as is Windows.

I'm using JVC HA-MR55X, pretty basic headphones, running straight to the motherboard audio output.

In the realtek audio manager i just have it set to stereo with left and right speakers.

I tried the previous suggestion and no luck with that and another system restart.

The green jack is what I'm connected to, if i go to a youtube video right now, i can hear everything fine, but when i go into a game, no sound. Again, same results when switching to monitor speakers, which are managed by NVIDIA's audio driver.

Writing a backup to my external hard drive now. Everything is actually working at the moment, i hope it was just some sort of silly software fluke.....

Can confirm that the nVidia SHIELD Controller is causing the issue. I have been pulling my hair out over this because of it's intermittent presentation. I even went to far as to exchange my mobo that I recently purchased to resolve the issue. No audio in Witcher 3, Fallout 4, BF 4, you name it, if it was a game it had no audio. Which is crazy, the first couple of days with the first mobo I had no issues. then issues persisted and no amount of installing/uninstalling programs would solve it. Swapped mobos, problems went away, then came back about a week later. Thank god for your find Clawx207.

Unplugging the controller before launching the game solves the issue. I prefer to play Witcher 3 with a controller.

Seems like there needs to be more people that complain to nVidia to get this issue investigated.
