I am looking for a very cheep cpu to game with, I already have a 1060 6gb, a EVGA 500w PSU, and a case. I was wondering how the intel pentium G5400 would perform with a 1060 6gb.

Solution

Don't go with the Ryzen 3 1200. Get the Ryzen 3 2200g. It's better, faster and has a great intergrated GPU that will cover you if your GPU breaks or is sent for repairs.

HEAD'S UP
You better have a 400W+ PSU or else any of the listed builds won't run.

EDIT: This build is $250 without the SSD and HDD. If you do go with this build, you should update the BIOS of the motherboard.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($94.99 @ Newegg Marketplace)
Motherboard: ASRock - AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill...
Do you need anything else to go with this CPU, or do you already have a motherboard and RAM?

If you have nothing and are looking to build a cheap gaming PC, the cheapest option to consider is probably the Pentium Gold G5400 on an H310 mobo, or a Pentium G4560 on a B250 motherboard. Both would require DDR4 RAM.

Another option is the Ryzen 3 1200 on a B350 motherboard (B350 is recommended for gaming as apposed to A320 because you can run faster memory on the B350 and overclock the CPU if you wanted), also required DDR4 RAM.

Also on the AMD side is the Ryzen 3 2200G, which comes with an integrated GPU that is capable of playing modern games at lower resolution. Requires updated B350 motherboard or B450.

FX is not a good CPU to buy in to. It's not only old, but it was never really that fast. It's okay for multi-threaded games and applications, but most games rely on single-threaded speed along with some multi-threaded.

If you want to use DDR3, your best option is to buy a used H81, B85, Z87, or Z97 motherboard and your choice of a 4th-gen CPU such as i5-4590, 4690K, i7-4790, 4790K.

But it would probably be best to sell the DDR3 and buy all new parts. With your GTX 1060 6GB, I'd skip the cheaper Pentium and go for an i3-8100. It's faster than a 4th-gen i5. I suppose if you had a hard budget of $200, you could get the Pentium Gold G5400 until you could afford a better CPU.

It's only a BIOS update. Nothing wrong with that, is it? Just download the BIOS into a USB and plug it in and watch a YT video on how to. Fairly simple. Not worth spending the extra money on the new motherboard when you can literally download the BIOS for free.

I’ll go with the 2200g and Ryzen has a program where they give you a loaner cpu for the bios update. I do have a 500w psu and I can stick with my hard drive until I can get enough to upgrade to an ssd

Select the new best answer please I'm desperate lol.

You can't administer the bios update without a compatible CPU. So, you'd either have to buy one or request one from AMD via the link I provided above.

Ryzen 2200G is better, it just comes with a hassle or extra cost on the B450 motherboard.

*facepalm*
You could just go to the motherboard's manufacturers' website and download the BIOS update from there...

Yes, but you won't be able to interface with the bios unless you already have a compatible CPU. So all you'd be looking at were a blank screen. To install a motherboard bios update, you must have a compatible CPU. By compatible, that means compatible with the current motherboard bios.

You could avoid that headache by purchasing a B450 motherboard which is compatible out of the box with Ryzen 3 2200G.

Motherboard: Gigabyte - B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($72.98 @ Newegg)

If so, then how did people update the BIOS without a compatible CPU...
People have built PCs with Ryzen 5 2600 CPUs (2nd gen) with 1st gen mobos, B350.
That is literally the same case but the CPU is a Ryzen 3 2200g.

They either had a first-gen Ryzen to update the bios, requested a loaner CPU from AMD, or the motherboard was manufactured after the bios update was released and already had the update.

If so, wouldn't they have said in the video?? It's pretty obvious you're wrong here.

I like the 2200g, however, you already have a dedicated gpu - the 1060 6GB- and the 2200g is an APU, so I'd rather get a more powerful cpu

I realize OP is limited by budget as well... but he has a GTX 1060 6GB, so it doesn't make too much sense to get an APU albeit a very good cpu 2200g

Yes, he is limited by his budget so the best option is to get the 2200g. Or he could find a deal somewhere for a Ryzen 5 CPU. The 1400, 1500x, 2400g, 1600 and 1600x are all great CPUs. If he can find a deal on that, then that would be marvellous.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. those cpus you listed are great. If he can find a great deal, yeah. good luck OP
