low fps. decent pc!

i have a decent new pc with i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti a 16 DDR4 and a monitor 144hz but the maximum fps it hits is 44!
i'm pretty sure it should hit more than that because it did before, but i can't figure out the problem
any help would be appreciated.

in what game ? have you tweaked all your options ?

Are you connecting to the graphics card or motherboard?

Have all the drivers been installed?

Are you using something like MSI Afterburner to monitor in-game performance? If so, what are the logs like?

Sounds like you are using your cpu on board graphics or using a hdmi cable instead of display port If you haven't already, download nvidia drivers for gtx 1080ti here-https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us, make sure that your nvidia card is enabled in device manager. Also use the display port on the gpu not hdmi.

what do you need exactly, because everything from the original post is from the test.

i tried everything you guys said, nothing works and every games has a crappy fps. even the pc is slow now i tried even resetting my pc but it failed
