I got the asus vg248qe and was playing black ops 2 with about 80-140fps. I cranked the refresh rate up to 144hz and now I get about 50-75fps. I didn't know the refresh rate effected performance(is it supposed to?) I thought it would just be fast enough the display the extra 30-90 frames that were going to waste in 60hz mode. Is there anything I can do to help the fps drop? I was looking forward to battlefield 4 because I ran the beta alright with 60hz but I want to play it with 144hz... Will a second 7970 enable me to max bf4 out with an above average frame rate in 144hz?

I'm not using the dual link dvi cable that came with the monitor. Absolutely no difference at all. I would try the display port but I don't have one on my graphics card.

I'm not using a light boost hack. Light boost is also greyed out in the OSD. My gpu has 1x dvi, 1 HDMI, and 2 mini display ports. I only have one option for DVI. I would try a display port but I don't have a converter from mini to regular display port. Also, if it was a problem with the monitor or cable then there would be a flaw in the image. There isn't, it looks wonderful. The lower I set the refresh rate, the better frame rate I get.

If everything worked correctly, there would be no loss of FPS as a result of refresh rate.

That is what I'll have to leave you with. Properly functioning monitors with proper connections, do not cause a loss of FPS regardless of refresh rate (unless the hz is lower with v-sync).

Is there anywhere else a vertical sync could be turned on other than the game and in ccc?

Weird, i dont know if AMD would release drivers to fix this problem if its only happening with this monitor but they have to really. Jared, just out of curiosity, do you even notice the difference between 120hz and 144hz, i dont think it will boost you that much and anyway, 144hz, come on its very difficult to reach 144 fps in a game maxed out at 1080p unless you have 2 of the high end cards sli. I mean that if this problem is existent and hasnt got any solutions till now, having 80-120 fps with 120hx will be smoother than having 65-70 fps with 144hz, I know that you want to juice every drop out of the monitor you spent your money on, but being practical thats the best solution for now until a fix comes up. Nice research you've done btw 😛

I'm planning on getting a second card just to be able to get it's full potential lol on battlefield I'm getting around 55-75 which is playable but I want more. I tested it in a game that I can get around 1600fps on, limited it to 120 and 144, I noticed a difference and it's the small differences that make or break in first person shooters...

If you found (from your research) that this monitor is the reason for the decreased performance, so why will you get a 2nd gpu while the prob is in the monitor. IMO you should RMA or sell this monitor and buy another one with good reputation where your 1 7970 can get you from 80-140 fps in your game and then when a game is released that needs more gpu power, you can then add the other gpu with confidence that your monitor wont hold their performance backwards.

There isn't a 144hz monitor for nearly as cheap. It performs fine in 120hz mode and is cheaper than a lot of 120hz monitors. I might sell my gpu for an r9 280x since they are slightly cheaper, perform better, and I think they are made to work with mantle more. Even though he said he tested it with other cards in that thread I linked you to, he seemed intent on the 7970 and provided a link to file a complaint about the drivers.

I personally would stick with 120hz and use Lightboost (highest refresh rate Lightboost works with). Use the ToastyX hack here to get it working.

You'll get 0 motion blur, which makes high refresh rates really pop.

All it did was turn my screen dark and purple...
