I want to purchase a new Graphics card and I am looking for a low power silent model. I will not be playing much in the way of games but it would be a bonus if it was able to play some older games at a some what reasonable speed.

My Current System:

i7 920
6 gb ram
GA-EX58-UD3R Rev 1.6
Win7 Pro x64
HD 4870 1GB (this thing is a monster, it's too big & power hungry, it needs two power plugs :fou:)
Seasonic x-650 psu
2 x WD 500g RE3 drives in RAID 0

The main thing I want the card to have is some sort of GPU acceleration for video playback. I watch a lot of movies on my PC, (some HD, some SD). I would like it to be DirectX 11 compatible and would feel better if it had 1GB of ram (though I guess this is not essential).

I do not care if it is ATI or NVIDIA, any suggestions ?

Looks like the HD5570 is quite easy to get without a fan which I like the idea of and the HD5670 did not get great reviews on this site (I believe they said it was pried too high, might not be relevant anymore).

Just to make sure I'm not wasting my money, either one of these cards would use significantly less power than my current one, is this correct (HD 4870) ?

How how would the overall performance compare (not that I'm overly worried) ?

In directX 11 only HD5770 overclocked in 950Mhz GPU, 1350Mhz GDDR5 i got 75 FPS max in Heaven 2.0 benchmark at 1280x1024 with your system will rock be sure about it, the only problem is the 60 c I’m getting so far the power consumption is depend of your systems hardware and the usage. The most games are in 32 bits and they can’t see more than 4Gbytes at 6 Gbytes you have pretty good room to run in the background applications you are fine.

I'm having a seizure. That was too much BS

This is the resolts of the Heaven Benchmark v2.0:
FPS: 26.7
Scores: 673
Min FPS: 6.4
Max FPS: 75.1

Also because the most people don’t understand the watts consumption is depend on the system usage I put Prime95 64 bits to use 6Gbytes memory this time and the result was 441 watts. I can Put 8Gbytes to be used and this will raise allot more the systems consumption:

See it full 1280x1024 to: http://admins.bnb.gr/~giatrakis/prime-torture-6Gb.jpg

Seriously thinking water CoolerMaster Aquagate Duo Viva RL-M4A-E7E3-GP but I didn’t find any reviews or tests on overclocks if you need a screen shot from Heaven Benchmark v2.0 i can manage.

The game settings i used but if you like give the setting you want to run it for you.

Ps: if you used the game settings is better than to change in every game in DirectX 11 Tessellation in extreme drops systems performance low and the graphics is bit out of real if you click on benchmark it generates a file and you save it I did paste everything as the others did in the forum.

I did end up getting a HD5570 Silent 1GB however I am not happy with it and want to get an equivalent Nvidia card.

This card seems to have weird issues when playing movies, the colours are messsed up and I also randomly get jerky playback in media player classic (not sure if the card is to blame for this but I've never had issues in the past).

Could someone please suggest some similar NVIDIA cards, must be silent and have similar power consumption and performance (could even have a little less performance if the power consumption was also less).

Thanks.

hd 5670 if you want directx11 and a little gaming,if you are not gaming and just watching videos and surfing.if gaming i would say that you should not care about power consumption.simply get if directx10 9800gt or 8800gt or directx11 is for hd 5750s and 5770s.anything less than that has no power to run directx11 games.

THERE IS NO DIRECTX11 OPTION AVAILABLE FOR NVIDIA WITH LOW POWER Consumption,gt 430 is ,but its weaker than hd 5570.if you want something good, consider 9800gt or 8800gt.but they have 105 consumption under full load.or if idle they would be around 60 to 70 watts.gt 240 is another option.but its slower than hd 5670 so i would not recommend it.

I had a look reviews of the Zotac GeForce GT 430 1GB Silent but they did not seem overly impressed with the card in general.

Forgetting about DX11 (probably not needed anyway) what nvidia cards are in the same league as the 5570. Low power consumption, fanless and hardware acceleration for video are my main concern (and price obviously).

Why are you trying to run a silent video card with an i7 920? If there's noise coming out of your system it's most likely from the cpu fan spinning up. Your video card won't make noise watching a movie. Does your case provide an exhaust for your video card? If not then your only choice is to go low wattage/slow to avoid dumping heat into your system or a dual slot card like an HIS IceQ 5670.

I originally had a ATI 4870 and it was noisy, big and required 2 extra power connectors. I then purchased a 5570 silent because I did not play games anymore and wanted to lower the power consumption of my PC for (for environmental and $$$ reasons).

I am not happy with the the 5570 I have and would like to try an equivalent Nvidia model (and yes I have 2 small intake fans near my drives and an exhaust fan at the rear).

If anyone can point me in the direction of some current model, low power passively cooled Nvidia cards for me to consider it would be appreciated.

(also it is not uncommon for fans to die of graphics which in turn cooks the card).

Thanks for all your replies...

It does not look like NVIDIA is as competitive as ATI is these low end cards. I was hoping to find a Geforce model with similar performance and power consumption figures to my 5570 but I can't seem to find one that fits the bill (I forgot to mention I don't want a card that requires a power connector either).

I looked at the GT 240 but according to
http://www.hwcompare.com/196/geforce-gt-240-gddr5-vs-radeon-hd-5570/
it uses a lot more power for what looks like less no real performance gain.

I starting to wonder if NVIDIA have anything that fits my needs.

well gt 240 is less than hd 5670.so thats also a problem.hd 5670 is almost a gaming card and gt 240 probably is not.9800/8800gt are still good options.you should also care about performance problems which gt 240 will give you😀
