lsass.exe, encryption & workgroup

On XP Pro SP2, I’ve copied a large [say 10GB] encrypted data from elsewhere via workgroup. Since the data was pasted decrypted, I encrypted them. On the next logons, lsass.exe causes high CPU/HDD activity. On a Pentium 2, it could last hrs…

If I log on to another user account [admin or limited, doesn’t matter], no issue.

According to this link, something odd has happened to C:\Documents and Settings\problem user\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect

Pls don’t advise on clean boot, safe mode, user profile recreation, possibility of infection or installing SP3 [unless SP3 solved it for sure].

I am just curious why someone would stick to OS which is 12 years old (I think Sp2 was released 2003). and sticks and sticks and sticks like this is last survivor on the earth...
- make a backup
- install SP3
- check to see whether your problem still persists

Alabalcho,

391 solutions, 2570 answers… wowee! I’ve been always thinking about the motivation behind replying to people like me… perhaps u’re heading towards being a Microsoft certified man, being paid by the ads/MS, reputation or doing charities… dunno… even u replied in an hour…

I was expected for such a response… this second-hand Toshiba laptop, designed for Win NT, was received for free in 2006… I use it for backups… can’t run a better Win on a 266 MHz CPU apart from Linux I suppose… I need at least 3 backups created by different programmes to risk on SP3; can’t gamble about connecting USB3/2 storages to its USB1 port. I don’t trust backup via LAN either. Also SP3 can’t live on 192 MB RAM I think, cos Commit Charge (K) Peak easily exceeds Total.

FYI, still having in mind to replace the CMOS battery of a second-hand 386 Samsung desktop… it’s a kind of soldered real-time clock…

Before posting here, have dedicated few weeks full-time to resolve lsass.exe issue… yes, I’m unemployed & never had any friends apart from the PCs… having used PCs for 12 yrs, I’ve never reinstalled an OS over the past 10 yrs…

You are using an old laptop for backups but don't want to use a USB drive? A laptop which is totally unsecure right now for connecting to the internet. That system is way too slow to run encryption/decryption on a large file. It will not have dedicated hardware to decrypt or encrypt the file, so it will take a long time before the file is fully encrypted and a long time for it to be decrypted for reading.

Your fix is to use a much faster system or just stick a USB external drive on your main system for backups which will be a lot more reliable than a 10+ yr old laptop with what I'm assuming is a hard drive just as old.

Hallo hang-the-9,

You are using an old laptop for backups but don't want to use a USB drive?
My critical data is saved on 8 HDDs, this old PC is one of them. Some of the backups 1 km away for the security reasons. Still need xtra backups on the internet, banks & even in foreign countries but I can’t afford…

A laptop which is totally unsecure right now for connecting to the internet.
I consider u an advanced PC user cos of the number of contributions on Toms. But I can say a Win user would be almost bulletproof if using NTFS, limited user account & EFS on Win 2000 & above. This old PC was being used almost daily between 06 to 12 & I have never had any security software on it… PS, ‘have never had’? my English!

That system is way too slow to run encryption/decryption on a large file. It will not have dedicated hardware to decrypt or encrypt the file, so it will take a long time before the file is fully encrypted and a long time for it to be decrypted for reading.
For my usage, it’s not; at least for an unemployed man. I’ve not benchmarked, but My Dox of this old machine have been encrypted since 06 & was not much slower than an ‘average’ Pentium 4.

…… for backups which will be a lot more reliable than a 10+ yr old laptop ……
It was in-service for 6 yrs – almost daily – by me, dunno about the previous owner(s)… when it comes to HDD MTTF, capacitors & fan lifetime, it’s simply much more than ‘proven’…

Did you follow the suggestions in the link you posted?

There is no such thing as a "proven" system when it comes to computers, only old and more likely to fail. But seems you have plenty of other backups anyway so it's not a big deal in your case.

There r some uncertainties on the link, I won’t risk cos I haven’t learnt about Microsoft\Protect yet…

I’ve studied 2 pages of Google Search for ‘lsass.exe lan encrypted’, the only appropriate info was that link… there r huge amount of info about ‘lsass.exe high CPU/HDD activity’ on the net, but PC Review was the only one referring the lsass.exe issue to EFS & LAN.

U have posted 2 times for me… don’t want to bother u more… still want to keep this thread open hopefully to find someone experiencing the same issue…

& unfortunately I’m used to unresolved issues!
