Before you give me a link to a $6 screw, or a $10 ten pack of screws....

Where can I walk in and purchase just ONE of this type of screw for the sub $.10 it should be?

I would even be satisfied if I could purchase one for under $1 or so and have it shipped for a few dollars instead of $7-10....like say under $5 for the screw and shipping just to save me the time of going out....

Yeah, that wouldn't work on my board, so I'm not sure that's a great idea. Not sure how you are going to tape down the drive if it's one that is raised onto a standoff with a second M.2 slot beneath it like a lot of them are now. Plus, motherboards heat up. Heat tends to unbind adhesive and release sometimes. Not sure I'd trust that as much as mounting it correctly with a retaining screw. But I guess in a pinch, it might be ok. Seems kind of hokey to me though. To each their own.

What motherboard do you have? Not every board uses the same retention screw, so the thread pitch could be different based on your board.

Did you lose yours, or why do you need one? Normally it comes pre-installed in the motherboard M.2 standoff.

Yup, aware of that aspect. One of the reasons I want to (hopefully) find somewhere to walk in and get one. I tried MicroCenter and they WILL NOT sell you less than 10 of two different kits, neither of which were the pitch/head I needed.

I need one for an ASRock board. The screw they sent is too long and won't screw all the way down.
The other I need for a Dell Laptop, which since it wasn't outfitted with the M.2 as new, didn't have one in the standoff either.

I really want to avoid buying a huge pack of them that I won't need or use for years while they sit around and get lost or just simply take up space. And in that same respect I just don't want to pay $10 shipped for something that should cost a nickel.

Are you in the US? Near a Fastenall? That would be the first choice, although it's likely that practically any hardware store with a GOOD supply of fasteners will have one.

What is the exact model of your motherboard and of the Dell laptop?

Another option would be a repair shop. Most of them probably have drawers with tens of them laying loose and might just sell you one for a buck. But you'll need the standoff it screws into or need to know the thread pitch and length.

Probably, they are these, but as I asked before, knowing the EXACT motherboard model would be helpful.

This screw.

On the ASRock, that's all I know...I mean it's almost word for word what is down the box....linky here:

As to the Dell...well...lol. (can't see it on the label, and can't power it up right now)

Edit, and thank you...met that criteria...let's give it a go.

Think the Dell is the same? Maybe?

Dude, just use some kind of spacer then between screwhead and pcb, don't have no plastic ring? rubber washer? Cut the barrel off an old pen with an exacto, something, this is not that hard.

Nope, tried a couple of various options and they were too big. I also considered just using a rasp to make it shorter, but don't have a great way to hold and/or fix the threads when done. As you may know when you cut the length of a screw you have to chase the threads after to straigten them. I don't have a nut that small.
I am actually doubtful that the screw I have is the correct one....as mentioned above it just came out of a bug bag of extras I have collected over the years.

There is actually a standard for those screws:

Specs are above.
Where to get one...
  1. Your local hardware store. Don't ask for a "screw to hold my m.2 drive". Instead, ask for "A screw of these dimensions"
  2. Your local mom and pop computer store.
  3. Order a box of 10 from Amazon or wherever.

I appreciate that, it matches with the specs on the one linked above.

I will say that if you look up "m.2 screw/standoff" on Newegg, there are several that come up. Similarly, when I went inside MicroCenter to try and purchase (as mentioned only the 10 pack available) they were NOT the correct size. They had not only a larger head, but larger threaded section as well. This is why I asked before just blindly looking around.

I have taken the one I have into Home Depot. Their bolt bin and resources are very limited to say the least. Normally what I try to do there is find a nut that fits what I want and then purchase the correct thread/pitch off that. In this case that was also a no go. My local Ace Hardware has nothing this small in stock. The local computer repair place went out of business not long ago.
There is a larger computer repair place across town, but honestly at that point it's just cheaper to order the big pack.
I will likely use the link provided above as it fits the price point I was hoping to stay under. Thanks much for the information.

There IS a standard, but I can verify for sure that not every board manufacturer is adhering to the standard. MOST of them will be the screw that I and USAFRet have posted. If there is a difference, then you'd be best off to remove the standoff and take it with you to a hardware store or better, Fastenal. Fastenal has them or can get them and they sell specialty screws in singles so you shouldn't have to buy a package just to get what you need.

Hell, I could send you ten of them for free, but it would probably take longer for you to get them than it would to order them with snail mail shipping AND I'd have to pay the postage, so that ain't likely. LOL.

Do you have a Fastenal store/dealer in your area.
I have gotten quite a few odd sized screws, bolts, etc. for my motorcycle from them.
As long as you know the specs for the screw you want they can almost certainly get one for you for $1 or less.
They also have an online presence But I have never ordered anything from them online since a store is olny a mile or so from my house.

LOL
Looks like Darkbreeze beat me to the punch on Fastenal.

I found out about Fastenal about 20 years ago when I was working as a Site Superindent for a fairly large Commercial Construction company.
As DB said they are not usually as inexpensive as most hardware stores But they can get you just about ANY screw or bolt you need.

That being said they are Definitely cheaper than buying OEM bolts or screws from Yamaha, Harley Davidson, etc. or car manufacturers.
I have gotten multiple bolt packs (with 3 or 4 bolts) from them for about $1 when the OEM single bolt cost $5 - $7 or more.
