Alright, I've searched for this specific question but couldn't really find anything. I have an Asus Maximus XI Hero with OS installed on a Samsung 970 PRO pcie. However, I have both a Samsung SSD 840 Evo 500gb and a Samsung Blue M.2 SATA SSD 500gb that I would like to use as a secondary drive to hold miscellaneous photos that I'm editing and other stuff. Which would be better? M.2 SATA SSD or regular SSD. Would the M.2 slot take up pci lanes? I'm vaguely aware that the M.2 lanes are routed differently that regular SATA ports, but how and could it affect other parts of my build like the graphics card?

I'm aware that they offer the same speeds, but will one or the other affect the performance of other tasks. I would be using both of my M.2 slots if I used the WD m.2 SATA would that affect cpu? Or should I just stick with regular 2.5" SATA drive and not risk impacting performance elsewhere?
