Just thought of something. Laptops use a special software that lets them do power saving by switching to integrated graphics, along with a bunch of other laptop exclusive stuff, so trying to switch it out would probably be nothing short of a nightmare.

No, this will not work.
You're introducing too many variables.

If the system does not boot up, is it because of the drive and its OS, or is it something else?

Is there a way to copy windows 10 to another m.2 for free?

Maybe, depending on exactly what you want to do?

"Copy" the OS from the laptop to a drive in the desktop?
No. This will not work. Put that thought out of your mind.

Install an OS in the desktop to test things? Sure.
Win 10 can be installed for free, leaving it unactivated.
Or any of the various flavors of Linux.

Now....exactly what are you trying to do?

Don't you have to have a disc with windows 10 on it first?

It will boot up, and try to start the Windows install routine. You won't have an actual OS to use.

Or, you could create a Live Linux USB and boot from that. This will give you a whole OS, to check the hardware out with.
