Trying to install a M.2 SSD. The device is not detected when trying to install the driver. I get the message "Samsung NVM Express Device is not connected. Connect the Device and try again.".
I have tried reseating it and have tried searching through my bios for any setting that may be relevant - the only one I came across basically disables SATA port 5 and 6 on my mobo when using M.2 devices. This was set to auto which I tried changing to M.2 to force this to be the case, still didn't help.
I tried reading through the mobo manual and the only thing I came across that maybe is an issue is that in one section there is the statement "When using Intel Desktop Responsiveness technologies with PCIe M.2 device, ensure to set up the Windows UEFI operating system under RAID mode.". I'm not even sure what Intel Desktop Responsiveness technologies are to be honest... but I really don't want to (and surely don't need to) set my drives in a RAID config to be able to use a M.2 drive...?
I also came across this YouTube video which seems to show a setting in the bios that needs to be changed for the system to see the drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7PEBscJbno
It is also a Z97 board so I thought I might have the same thing but alas I don't see that setting anywhere in my bios. Could it be that my bios is out of date (there is a newer one available, but surely all the versions would allow for M.2 devices)? Should I try flashing it (I have always been rather wary of that and don't think I should until all other options have been explored)?
Does anyone have any idea on what I can try here please? I only have a couple days in which to return the device if needs be. Could the drive even be DOA (how could I know this)?
I also came across a video where a bunch of bios settings get changed and all SATA cables unplugged to get it to recognize the drive and install Windows on it... I don't want this to be my windows drive though, merely for storage to run my games from. This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No-ct8pQcIg&html5=1

The original video I watched makes it seem so simple - but I immediately get stuck when trying to install the driver as stated above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N16X7kSf5k (installation starts at about 3:45)

The mobo I have is an ASUS Z97-K/USB3.1
The drive I am trying to install is a Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2, 250GB.

- go in motherboard bios, check its version number, compare to latest available version on Asus support page for your motherboard, eventually update it version 0702
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97KUSB31/HelpDesk_BIOS/
- choose sata AHCI MODE IN BIOS

Ok... I have never updated a bios before though. I have downloaded the latest version and put it on a USB drive - do I just restart, go into the bios and use the EZ Flash tool? Is there anything I should be wary of in this process? (sorry - beginner here).

I am trying to share the pic but it doesn't seem to want to post. Uploaded to Google Photos and used the URL with the Img function. Anyway, here is the direct link to the pic then:

Yes, my bios isn't the latest version. I can't seem to find any setting that would be useful but maybe I am just missing something. In the one video, the guy talks about disabling CSM and clearing secure boot keys or something... but that is all a bit above my head I'm afraid. He was trying to make it the boot drive and load windows on it though, which I am not. Just want my PC to pick it up so I can install the driver and allocate the drive to use the extra storage space for my games.
I am wary to update the bios - or is this a common place thing to do these days? Have seen so many warnings against it in the past.

Well I updated the bios which I confirmed is now the latest. Unfortunately it still isn't detecting the drive. However, there is now a new setting under the Advanced tab in bios called NVMe Configuration. My drive isn't showing up when I click on it though - see pic I took of the bios here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/d7LDvoY0ZYUzODVf2

I tried reseating the drive again, no luck. Also tried to disable CSM like one of the YouTube videos states (it did come up with a message about m.2 drives and PCIe storage only being able to be used for storage unless they have the UEFI driver on them or something... I just clicked ok because I only want it for storage anyway, not boot). Anyway... still doesn't seem to have made a difference.
Please help! This is hugely frustrating!

Regarding the Youtube vid you referred to, I unfortunately don't seem to have that setting in my bios (the one for changing the PCIe x4 to M.2 mode).
I do have the NVMe configuration setting option that you showed an image of but my drive doesn't show up there - sent a link to the image of that earlier, here it is again: https://photos.app.goo.gl/d7LDvoY0ZYUzODVf2

I am running windows 10.

I am running Windows 10. I have a Transcend SSD370 as my main boot drive and a WD Blue 1TB HDD for storage.

Is there any way for me to test if the m.2 SSD is possibly DOA? Possibly just a faulty drive or something? But don't want to get a replacement and then sit with the same issue - I highly doubt I'd be able to get my money back after that.

Yes, I did... It was already set to AHCI actually. I even tried RAID briefly but then it kind of just got stuck in a boot loop because I didn't fully go through with setting up a RAID volume so I just changed it back to AHCI - I don't want to run in RAID anyway.
I guess I was hopeful that switching between the two would help it pick the drive - but no such luck.

Check with your motherboard Mfg and find out if it supports NVMe M.2 it may only support Sata, also check with
the board mfg and see if they have a driver that will support NVMe M.2 ssd's they may not. If that's case you may
have to stick to the somewhat slower Sata 3 version Samsung 960 evo Sata 3.

The SATA drive you're thinking of is the 860 EVO, not the 960 EVO

You are exactly right it is the 860 evo, but the main thing is, it must be a sata 3 with the new M.2 driver or the drive will not be recognized by hard drive management .
