I'm attempting to get a Samsung 970 EVO 250GB NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD on my MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard. But I've been reading through some other posts that say I would not be able to utilize the full speed of the SSD? Can anyone confirm this? If so would something like this converter help? https://www.amazon.com/Mailiya-M-2-PCIe-3-0-Adapter/dp/B01N78XZCH/ref=pd_sbs_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01N78XZCH&pd_rd_r=a50d747c-ed27-11e8-bf9b-571f7e12ada0&pd_rd_w=YW35m&pd_rd_wg=CppoN&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=7d5d9c3c-5e01-44ac-97fd-261afd40b865&pf_rd_r=9SSM6A8YYZKVM2R5TD1E&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=9SSM6A8YYZKVM2R5TD1E

Solution
Z97 board?
Don't bother with an NVMe drive like the 970.

You can't utilize it to its full extent.

On that board, in a blind test, you couldn't tell the difference between the 970, or an 860 EVO at 1/2 the price.

And you might not even be able to boot from it.
Z97, right? Looks like only supports PCIe x2 so would not run full speed. But, it will do sata3 in that form factor and large m.2 like the 860 evo are super cheap right now.

For gaming, you’d not notice the difference between the two and with 860 evo you get far more storage per $.

What set up do you think will get me the fastest possible load times in a game like Overwatch or Counter-Strike? I'm currently running of a 5 year old SSD lol.

Identical speed. Just a different form factor and connection type.
And depending on which one you have now, probably not a lot of difference.

My 4+ year old 840 EVO's run at just about the exact same speed as my 2 month old 860 EVO.

One more question: Would a converter like this work? https://www.amazon.com/Mailiya-M-2-PCIe-3-0-Adapter/dp/B01N78XZCH/ref=pd_sbs_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01N78XZCH&pd_rd_r=a50d747c-ed27-11e8-bf9b-571f7e12ada0&pd_rd_w=YW35m&pd_rd_wg=CppoN&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=7d5d9c3c-5e01-44ac-97fd-261afd40b865&pf_rd_r=9SSM6A8YYZKVM2R5TD1E&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=9SSM6A8YYZKVM2R5TD1E
