M.2 taking up pcie lanes?

At the moment I'm looking at going for a m.2 SSD as a boot drive with extra space etc. What I am curious about however, is if the m.2 takes up a pcie lane, I've been going around watching youtube videos and just decided to post here for a solution. The boards in question for this matter are the Asus x99-e ws, and the Asrock x99 ws.

i believe m.2 takes up 4 pcie lanes if i recall correctly...

You guys are both right, its seems that on the mobo given in the link by i7Baby, the mobo had a m.2 that had 4lanes available for it along with a drive that, but generally it is 2, with 4 available

Wish I could give both of y'all a solution
