as title say I would like to know which adapter to get, but quality one.

does Samsung Pro 950 require any special adapter?

and does adapters provide any data transfer reduction, or increase in latency? if does, than which one is best regarding that.

also, is heatsink needed? as we know, for SM951 is recommended. even if not needed, it would not hurt to have one and lower temperatures.

advices, names, links, tnx 😉

again, google for reviews of that Bplus card - 1st as to the gap, i'm not sure how much thermal tape are you going to have to use, 2 layers? 3 layers? - it was a substantial gap - google for it, there were images showing it

as to my being sure it's a PCIe 2.0 card - i can't state that with certainty - the benchmarks in that amazon link, if performed with a sm951 512gb ssd, were horrible but you can't tell from the picture - i suspect, and the key word there is suspect it was done with a sm951, but again, google for reviews of that card and see if any reviewer tested it with anything newer than an xp941 (which is PCIe 2.0 x 4)

This morning Bit-Tech finally got around to publishing a review of the 950 Pro.

Here is the link to the complete review:

The very last page contains information about throttling:

"Thermal throttling is another concern for M.2 drives (hence the lack of double-sided parts), but in our setup at least the SSD 950 Pro appeared to be unaffected. Granted, we were testing in an ATX case (panels on) with good airflow and a relatively low ambient temperature, but it's still promising. Even in a more constrained environment like a small form factor build, it's unlikely to be that big of an issue since demanding tasks tend to come in bursts leaving the drive with plenty of idle time in which to cool down."

I took a look at the test setup. A Corsair 760T case was used for the review. The case must have "adequate airflow".

good to hear that 😉

I bought 950 PRO (shipped on my friends adress in US, but now he have to send it to me in EU with other parts).

also that Asus Expansion card PCIe 3.0 was bought few days ago.

I will test both that card and Bplus 2.0 card.

with Cosmos II case, there should be plenty of good airflow so it will surely help to keep good temperatures on ssd.

I got 2 950 pro's on an ASUS z170 deluxe one of which is on the ASUS hype x adapter. Works perfectly fine as far as I can tell .

Temps are normal and No it doesn't have anything extra , just the asus adaptor . The one on the adaptor is actually a little faster than the one that's in the m.2 slot . 2602 vs 2495 read speeds according to Samsung magician .

Hi Bill, any chance you give us an indication of what sort of performance did you get with the Samsung 950 on your X58 system?

A lot has changed in the meantime. Here are my results with my X99 me 950 Pro and my X58 platform
sorry but this stupid forum will not allow my to paste an image
I will not be bother with this forum anymore

Just trying to get a handle on the actually performance of the Samsung 950 whilst hooked up to a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot on a X58 system. Just want to get an idea before I purchase.

Thanks anyway Bill. I think I've spoke with you on the Adobe Forums....will catch you over at some point. :)

Did you get that Asus Hyper M.2 x4 PCIe card connected M.2 drive bootable on the x58 chipset? How did you do it? Using Clover EFI booter? Something else?

Thanks!

950 Pro has legacy mode Option ROM built into its firmware, so when a legacy BIOS initializes it, the 950 presents itself as a bootable AHCI drive (or even IDE). Nothing special is needed as the x58 system will see it as it see's any other SSD. The SM951 (an OEM drive anyway) doesn't work that way which is why legacy BIOS boards do not see them in their BIOS menus unless it is a AHCI version, and even then some are not seen on some chipsets/bios builds. Samsung made sure that the 950 Pro would work in even legacy devices because that is what makes it listed as a consumer drive... Benchmarks for 950 Pro on x58 is 1706 MB/s read and 1570 MB/s write on PCIe 2.0 according to this user.
