Hello all, I'm using a TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING (WI-FI) Motherboard with an Intel I7-9700k and the first of my two M.2 slots seems to not be working. I've been using a Samsung 970 Evo Plus as my boot drive for awhile now in the M.2_2 socket, and a 840 pro SATA III SSD for extra storage. I recently got a new Samsung 980 Pro SSD to use in the M.2_1 slot for some more storage. After the first install it was not detected until a restart when I was then able to partition the drive and start using it. After booting up my pc again the next time it was gone completely from windows and not detected in the BIOS. The drive showed up one more time in about 30 boots where it was working fine, all other times up to now the drive is not detected in Windows or BIOS.

I swapped the 970 Evo and the 980 Pro to each others slots, and the 980 was recognized first try in the M.2_2 slot in BIOS, while the 970 Evo I've been using did not show up in M.2_1.
I've tried this without my SATA III SSD installed, leaving all 6 of my SATA ports empty, still nothing.
I'm using an Geforce 1070 in PCIEx16_1, all other PCIE slots are empty

I don't think this is a compatibility or bandwidth issue, unless I'm missing something? here are some of my motherboard specs from the manual:

- M.2_1 socket supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA mode M key design and type 2242/2260/2280 PCIe and SATA storage devices.

- M.2_2 socket supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA mode M key design and type 2242/2260/2280/22110 PCIe and SATA storage devices.

- When the M.2_1 socket is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 2 will be disabled.

- When a device is installed on the M.2_2 socket, SATA_5/6 port cannot be used.

- These sockets support IRST - Intel Rapid Storage Technology
(All the drives mentioned are using IRST)

I'm thinking maybe the M.2_1 slot broke, or has been broken? Since this is the first time its been used since I bought the board about 2 years ago. (pls forgive me im a noob)

Any suggestions/ input/questions and comments are greatly appreciated! thanks for reading.

I don't use Samsung SSDs, but.......

Are you knowingly using Samsung drivers of the latest version?

Are you using Samsung Magician at all?

What version of Windows 10 are you on....or Windows 11?
I am using Samsung Magician, it tells me my 970 is using intel drivers. It's recommendation is to "Use Microsoft or Samsung NVMe driver"
when I try installing the NVMe driver it says "Samsung NVMe Device is not connected"

Can't personally help you other than to say that there an awful lot of forum posts about M.2 drives that are not recognized over the last couple of months.

I have not followed how they were resolved, if at all........but you might scan for similar thread titles and drill into them.

Somebody else here has probably been paying closer attention than I have.

What exact Windows version and build number?

Sorry I didn't see that, I'm running Windows 10, Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043. 1586)
I'll do some more digging, thank you for the help :)

I will take a stab at this and say, you need an 11th Generation CPU to use a NVM3 M.2 SSD drive in the 1st M.2 slot M2P_CPU, that 1st m.2 slot is supported by the CPU and your 10th Gen CPU is the problem, don't shoot me if I got this wrong, but that's what I think is going on here, new Motherboards that have that M.2 PCIE 4.0x4 M2P_CPU slot needs a 11Gen CPU to support that slot, if you're installing a M.2 SSD drive into that slot

Completely wrong.
TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING (WI-FI) is not compatible with Intel 10th gen and 11th gen. Also this board doesn't support PCIE 4.0.

Hi, just to be clear I'm using an i7-9700k at 3.60ghz, and yes you are correct. I read that the 980 pro was compatible with PCIE 3.0, I know it won't get the same read/writes but I thought it was a good investment towards a future build.
still trying to find the issue :)

here is something else that might be an issue...System acceleration with Intel® Optane™ Memory can only be enabled on the M2P_CPU connector and with an 11th Generation Intel® processor installed.

it means that you have Intel Optane Memory enabled in your BIOS on a 9th Generation CPU?

here is my thinking, if your Motherboard does not support PCIe Gen 4.0 drives and your new Samsung 980 Pro M.2 is a Gen 4.0 SSD drive, could that be the issue here?
It's a possibility, I read that the 980 Pro is backwards compatible with PCIe 3.0 so it should work just like a 3.0 M.2 drive.
I've tried changing the M.2 settings in my mobo from auto to gen 3 but that didn't do anything, I didn't think it would cause like you said my mobo does not support 4.0
Also just the fact that the drive managed to show up a few times and work makes me think that this is more than a compatibility issue, but definitely a motherboard issue cause I've used Samsung drives for a long time and they work great. But who knows, I guess I should have gone with another 970 cause I know they work with what I have :)

try this, re-install your boot SSD SATA drive the way it first worked, remove that M.2 drive from the M.2_2 slot (that older Samsung SSD M.2 drive, i think it was your Samsun 970 one, and put that in M.2_1 slot, leaving slot 2 empty, and try to boot up

I'll give it a shot, also just saw your message about the intel optane, I'll try disabling that, I've seen a lot of people saying that it can cause problems with m2 ssd's.

I think a PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD drive can be installed in your Motherboard M.2_1 slot, so try to boot up either with your boot Samsung 970 M.2 in slot 2 with a free PCIe Gen 3 drive in slot 1 or else boot from a SATA HDD or SATA SSD with an empty PCIe Gen 3 M.2 in slot 1

I mean, when enabling Intel Optane Memory acceleration in the BIOS on M.2. slot 1 (M2P_CPU), you need an 11 Generation CPU, I think, I'm just wondering if that M.2 slot 1 can be used with any M.2 Gen 3 SSD drive when Optane Memory accelerator is not enabled, I don't think your slot 1 is bad at all

booting with my old 970 in slot 1 and with slot 2 empty took me straight to bios, drive not seen, i reinstalled both drives to there original spots.
booted back to bios and only recognized the 970 in slot 2 as usual. I turned off optane and rebooted and it said inaccessible boot drive so switched back to optane.

What does this mention of IRST mean? Did you load some software related to it? Since you're using 2 fast m.2 drives, IRST is not necessary. I personally would never use it since its not necessary and unnecessarily complicates things. It could be interfering with your ability to swap drives.

No software or anything just mentioning it, I didn't know that IRST isn't necessary when I built the PC but I see that now :)

I would try to disable that Optane accelerator in your BIOS somehow, that could be what's causing the problem for anything installed in slot 1 and Optane Memory accelerator enabled
I just tried and after the reboot I got a Windows error screen saying incompatible boot drive, went back to bios and switched optane back on and was able to boot from my 970.
I assume I'll have to format my drive?

in found this on Google

Do not disable Optane memory in BIOS unless you have first disabled the feature in the Intel RST application.
  1. Open the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application.
  2. Click the Intel Optane memory tab.
  3. Click Disable.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.
  5. After the disable process is complete, click Reboot to restart the computer. caution:
