M2D vs M2H

On my motherboard (Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7) according to the manual it looks like in AHCI the M2D disables SATA 0, 1, 2 and 3 but 4 and 5 are active. On the M2H all SATA ports are active. Both say 32BG/sec.

Does the M2D have an advantage in some way? If not why not use the H and retain all the SATA?

There is no advantage, it's just how the mobo is wired. M2H shares with the 3rd pcie x16 slot and M2D shares with the sata slots.

Ok that is what I wanted to know. Thanks! I will (more likely) never use the 3rd PCIe so I will install in the H slot.

Thank you. I have the same question and the same motherboard, and glad to find this answer here. Planning to buy an Intel Optane 660p drive, so was checking the manual and had this question.
