M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 DDR3-1600 compatibility

Hello experts,

I was just wondering if this board would support this ram

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH

without overclocking? or i have to overclock it to 1600mhz?

Yes, the F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH(XMP) is in the QVL for that motherboard.

I'm not yet sure if I'm going to get that MOBO, but it's one of my options. The other one is the M4A89TD Pro/USB3 890FX board. I just thought of the integrated GPU as a backup just in case the discrete GPU is DOA.

I've already looked into that QVL list and saw the ram kit in there.

My question is, will it work on the board without overclocking? or I need to overclock first before it runs on 1600mhz?

According to the M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 specs its capable of running on 2000mhz in OC.

It's like a vestigial appendage, and if gaming is "not" on your list then keep your choice and don't add a GPU. Otherwise the on-board GPU will suck-up resources and at least 0.5GB+ of shared RAM. However, "if" gaming is part of you "needs" then I would choose the ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3. Edit: Many MOBOs do allow you to disable the GPU in the BIOS, but I am not certain how that will impact a "real" CF.

Technically, anything over 1066 MHz is "overclocking" so yes 2000 MHz RAM is OC. However, the RATED speed of the RAM needs to be the "primary" concern. Also, RAM above 1600 MHz is tricky to use, and I would not recommend using RAM faster than 1600 MHz w/o significant CPU OC; the disparity in speed can render the system unstable in many instances. In addition, there are (2) lists of approved RAM - one for 6-core and the other for the lesser core CPUs.

In addition, a few {ATI/HD} companies offer Lifetime Warranties on some of their GPUs: XFX, & VisionTek; nVida GPUs warranties are generally better. However, you have a CF {CrossFire only MOBO}, but you could run a single nVidia GPU.

Hmmm.. thanks for the advice. Greatly appreciate it. I'm actually leaning towards the M4A89TD Pro/USB3, I just got curious when I compared the two MOBO's ram specs so I asked you guys about it.

Thank you for the info, but I'm not yet sure if this answers my question. The M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 says it can run memory standard of DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1333/1066 (1600mhz is not specified here so I'm not sure if it will run w/o OC'ing) and the M4A89TD Pro/USB3 says it can run memory standard of DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 (1600mhz is specified here so I'm assuming it will run w/o OC'ing)

Am I correct with my theories here? Please feel free to correct me. Thanks in advance and sorry if it seems like I'm asking the same question over and over again. 😀

1600 MHz RAM will run on either MOBO; those numbers are referring to MOBO native speed supported RAM. As I mentioned before the RAM base speed is 1066 MHz so you will need to adjust the Memory Multiplier for the "Rated" speed.

Regarding the choice of ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 x16/x16 - this is a better option particularly in CF {CrossFire} scaling the other MOBO scales to x8/x8. Either is a good choice.
