[SOLVED] mac reformat question

i have a .dmg file of mac osx so that i can finally upgrade my computer. would just running the installation right of the hard drive be a bad thing or should i burn the image to a cd? when everything is said and done would it wipe out my hard drive or will it just install over it and keep all the existing files?
