I have a friend who has a Macbook Air 2013. I just bought him the 2D Steam game Stardew Valley and he attempts to run it under Wine. It runs for a second and then nothing happens.

What is the simplest solution: my guesses are:

(1) remove wine, and see if installation succeeds without it.

(2) I've read that some Steam games can play on PC and Mac. Is this true?

(3) Bootcamp

(4) VM

I'm looking for a solution that is free, and the simplest to deploy. Thank you in advance fr your help.

Solution
1) removing Wine won't help

2) If the game runs on Mac you need to run that version of the game. I'll look further into that game.

3) Bootcamp allows you to run Windows as a dual-boot setup. You'll then boot to Windows and everything will work similar to a system with the same hardware, assuming proper drivers exist.

Investigate if W10 video drivers work properly.

You'd still have to BUY a copy of Windows and Bootcamp (is Bootcamp free? Not sure, but easy to check.)

4) VM:
You'd still have to BUY a copy of Windows for that too, and a VM can have issues, and will run a lot worse as you're running the game in Windows, on top of Apple. I doubt it would work well.

So...?

Unless the game is available for Mac you are out of luck for a...

Solution
This is the Mac Steam store BTW:
http://store.steampowered.com/browse/mac/

Your game appears if I SEARCH for it, but it says Windows 7 or greater, so no Mac support.

From website:
"What platforms will I be able to play Stardew Valley on?

At launch, Stardew Valley will be available on PC."

("PC" means Windows though technically a Mac is a personal computer)

Some games run on Mac. It will be listed in the requirements.

I would guess bootcamp would be the most easy, but a VM may work.

The game lists requiring shader model 3(DX9c). This may be an XNA game or something. For some reason XNA(helps port games from PC to Xbox[and some other ms systems] and back) games have a shader requirement higher than the video quality would have you believe.

Unfortunately bootcamp is not exactly free. You still need a copy of Windows and that is not free. You may be able to give Wine another try(may just need some tweaks XNA4 and Dotnet4 or whatever else you have to fake).

More info:
apparently Wine doesn't support DX10 for THIS GAME and that is the issue? Not sure. You can find the Wine comment below:

Someone did say there that W10 in a VM works, but as I said you have to buy W10. Not sure about a comment that said MS is offering free developer images but that's beyond me.

*Keep an eye out and perhaps you'll see someone get it working.

I, with the help of the awesome community on the Stardew Valley forums, made a Wineskin wrapper that should fit the bill! Success seems really high with it and I personally fire it up and play it every day: http://community.playstarbound.com/threads/wineskin-wrapper-for-mac.108737/

Happy farming!
