[SOLVED] MacBook Pro 6,2, non-stop, auto-rebooting (kernel panics)

Hey guys, I've had this MBP for about 5 years and it started going haywire about 2 years ago. Since I have other windows laptops, I meant to get around fixing this (taking this to a shop) but never did.

I should mention that it fell off a recliner, on it's corner, about a 4 foot drop. the LAN connection port is dent a bit. There is a dent in the middle of the port but I can still squeeze the cable in and I'm sure I could "fix" the dent a little.

So up until this point, I thought the HDD was damaged because of bad sectors from all the crashing and rebooting. I ran so many tests, for so long, trying to repair the HDD but it came back clean every time. I tried other 3rd party apps a while back, same results. I wanted to swap out the HDD to test a HDD that I knew for sure wasn't damaged and I finally did it last week. I got a 525 GB Crucial M2 SSD. I updated the OS before the SSD dwap and after. I wiped the HDD clean before that and it still froze up.

I have no clue what to do now. I have a decent MBP, all the drivers are up to date, like the OS, new SSD and still it crashes every 20 minutes or so. Probably longer if I just leave it idle but that's not good enough. I've spent hours researching but replacing the HDD to the SSD should've resolved my issues. I guess I need to replace the MOBO because it's damaged? Is that even worth it at this point? Any help would be much appreciated, I'm exhausted and on the verge of taking it to GeekSquad but I really don't want to pay a few hundred when the MBP isn't worth too much now anyway.

Well, it is a GPU fault that is causing your crash. The way it is listing memory addresses makes me think that if could be your RAM as the integrated graphics has to use your system RAM. If your RAM is damaged you'd expect to see other errors as well though. So, if you've had these errors through multiple driver updates, we can rule that out.

If I were you I'd call this one a lost cause. Sure you could replace your RAM and see if that fixes it, but if it doesn't you just wasted money. It could also be a CPU problem or a motherboard problem, and those are soldered together, which makes it not a terribly cost effective repair. If you want to make sure that it isn't OS specific, you can take your extra drive (which I think you have if you read it right) and install Windows on it to see if it still has the issue.

There isn't a whole lot else that you can do.

I do have some RAM lying around I could swap out. It is being used in an old laptop and that never crashes. Guess that'll be my starting point and go from there. What would you guess the price is on a new MOBO? Hopefully the RAM swap works. Thanks for the idea.

Honestly I have no idea. I also don't know what model you have so I can't exactly search it either. Usually, laptop motherboards aren't cheap. A replacement for one of my old Sony laptops was going to be just over $300... for an Apple device? I wouldn't be surprised to see $500 parts. You might be able to salvage one from a MacBook Pro with a cracked screen or something on eBay though.

Actually, that isn't a bad price. If necessary, I don't see a reason to not do it.

RAM was not the issue. Still crashes.

there is a Capacitor on the motherboard that fails, and when the kernel tries switching from inbuilt graphics to the NVIdia GPU there is a power fluctuation that triggers the kernel panic, when it goes from 'state 1' (inbuilt graphics - low power state) to 'state 3 (high power state switch to the NVidia GPU where the capacitor is supposed to help the changeover) it fails, crashes and reboots.


I know because I have one of these with the same 'fault.

Best 'fix' apart from getting the actual capacitor replaced is to use a programme to try and keep the Macbook from using the Nvidia chipset;
