I bought my Macbook Pro because I run both operating systems on it. I need OSX for the music business and also Final Cut Pro. Lot of OSX only apps and hardware. Also, resale on Macs are just sick, you can sell them for up to 80%. Last 5 years I've sold used Macs and gotten a brand new one for $400 or less, the price of a good video card. My girlfriend sold her 4 year old Macbook pro 17 inch for $1250, and got a 2011 Macbook Pro for $999 from MicroCenter, so she got a new Mac AND came out $250 ahead. Good luck selling ANY 4 year old PC for over $1000: nobody wants em.

But that still shows how stupid Mac users are. After 4 years Mac hardware is just as outdated as PC hardware. Its not like apple was using super cutting edge tech thats still top of the line 4 years later.

Do Mac users think that time stops or something and that 4 year old specs are somehow newer and more special than 4 year old pc specs?????

Well, it sold for that much because the 2007 Macbook Pro has both firewire 400 and a firewire 800 slot on it; the new ones have only firewire 800. It also has the express card slot so that he could hook up 3 more firewire devices. 99% of all the best audio interfaces use firewire 400, and he's in the Music business. He's running 2 different audi interfaces and a Focusrite Liquid Mix, and the Liquid Mix is not friendly to daisy chaining. As he can run 50+ track sessions on the 4 year old Mac and a Mac with Firewire400+expresscard slots will cost him a minimum $2500, he got a good deal.

Nice to see a bump in specs. Macbook Pro's are amazing laptops depending on your needs. It's the go-to standard in fields like design, music, and video production. There is a reason for that. The price is inflated, no doubt, but you will be hard pressed to find such a durable laptop that works as well Mac Book Pro. These things can take a beating, and they just keep chugging.

Have you seen the people that walk out of the apple store with a new Macbook. It looks like they just rode a horse. Ever time someone buys an Mac computer at the Apple store, they bend you over and screw you from behind at the checkout counter. That is Apple's way of saying thanks for buying our overpriced piece of crap computer. I heard though the soreness only lasts about 3 months.

every geek knows that the word PC stands for a machine with Windows OS....noob

My Ubuntu machines are also PCs. Only an Apple moron considers their computers something other than a personal computers. They have the same components as PCs and were it not for Apple locking them down, they could run on windows alone.

[citation][nom]greghome[/nom]Agreed, Apple build their PCs to exploit dumb people......and yea Macs are PCs too, look up on the definition of Personal Computer[/citation]
Look up for definition of von Neumann's machine. Mac despite x86 architecture is still processor and not bus oriented machine, thus it is computing machine but it's not PC.

[citation][nom]nebun[/nom]every geek knows that the word PC stands for a machine with Windows OS....noob[/citation]
Nope, PC is bus oriented x86 based architecture. Has nothing to do with OS. That's what geeks know, you are wrong as much as he is.

[citation][nom]alyoshka[/nom]Well, lets hope with the miniscule hardware upgrade there is no gigantic price upgrade....[/citation]
[citation][nom]cold fire[/nom]Meanwhile, the Lenovo Y470 is only $749 !!And it has similar and some better specs than the CrapBook -2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM Processor ( 2.00GHz 1333MHz 6MB )-NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M 1GB-8 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz-500GB 7200rpm-And lastly a better OS --Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64[/citation]

And the Lenovo has a crappy display, trust me I have one and the resolution and color suck.

[citation][nom]aznshinobi[/nom]LOL, a much better spec wise Lenovo is only $1000 compared to this. Well inflated for the price.[/citation]

I recently bought a Lenovo Y570 and the display is washed out and the color is bad. My Macbook Pro has a much nicer higher res display. You can't always judge based on hardware specs alone.

[citation][nom]bennaye[/nom]I still complain because it's far more fun to jump on the Apple bandwagon-of-hate than to shell out actual money to buy something. I've been doing this for some time now, so it gets hard for me to resist commenting on Apple's outrageous prices for something that can be bought for 40% less at the PC side of things.Oh dang, I did it again.[/citation]

I think you might need to get a life. Try talking to girls although I doubt you'll have much luck at this stage in your development. :)

This is what I try to explain to people all the time. Sure, you're buying in at a higher price, but you also resell Macs at a higher price. I've own many different PCs and Macs and I've always gotten much more money for Macs that are the same age as equivalent PCs. I've always purchased Macs with a education discount or discount from family member at the Apple Store and when it came time to resell it a couple years later I've often broke even or sometimes even ahead!

Exactly. I hate reading these comments on these Apple stories since people just jump on the, "let's hate apple" bandwagon and recommend cruddy laptops since they have a better video card :/

For lay people, Apple laptops sell because they are cute, light, and have good battery life.
For programmers, Apple laptops sell for the same reason as above in addition to Unix with actual support, aswell as their superb screens.

For self proclaimed "Tom's geeks," they don't sell since these people just want to max out their specs and play games.

I love you Tom's commentators for your best bang per buck when building gaming PCs, but otherwise you guys are out of touch.

The extra markup is definitely worth the extra "luxurious" features of a Mac, or any other "luxurious" laptop like the new ultrabooks as well as the thin light weights made by Dell. If you want to play games, get a PC or a desktop replacement laptop (Asus 17inch).

[citation][nom]bennaye[/nom] And Apple designs their products with the *RICH* stupid person in mind. Which is contradictory when you think about it, but true nonetheless. [/citation]

Seems to be a contradiction here. Most who are rich are intelligent. You rarely, if ever, see truly stupid people who are rich. It is interesting how concerned people are about what other people are buying. Does it really matter?

An interesting note: I went to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest a couple of weeks ago. A lot of Hollywood studio people there, German companies, American companies, and almost 300 different "booths" in all. Almost all of them had computers, yet none of them were Windows based computers...all MBP's or MacMini's.

A big reason why Mac sells their machines for so much too is the fact that their OS is not for consumer purchase. you have to buy a machine. So, if you have to use Mac OS, or you want one, you have to buy their units. Period. They can charge what they want solely because of demand. It must be nice to take advantage of people, tell them they are being taken advantage of, and then having them smile as you sell them your product anyways.

There is more to laptops than raw specs.

How many other laptops have CNC milled aluminium chassis?
How many come with a well supported unix system preinstalled?
All the little features like the huge multitouch trackpad (and software support for it), magnetic power connector, etc....

Sure they are hopelessly expensive, but there simply are no other laptops this sexy on the market.

The film industry uses Linux and Windows, as does the design industry. I imagine that major music companies also would use open platforms. The only people who really use Macs for development are hipster groups.

I work in the IT industry and I'm always surprised at the number of people who have Macs. I've been to many data storage conferences lately and I see lots of other knowledgeable computers folks carrying around Macs. I'm talking UNIX/Windows sysadmins like myself.

I spend all day administering Solaris, Red Hat, and Windows systems but I come home to my Mac. I still have my Linux fileserver chugging along at home. I'll hop on my home-built gaming PC for a little gaming action. I'll watch streaming Blu-Ray rips, Hulu, and Netflix from my home-built HTPC. But I always come back to the Mac for managing my Photos, editing videos, general web browsing, and other work stuff.

Where are you getting your data? I am a designer and have worked in the industry for some time. I've only worked at 2 jobs where PC's were used (they were the exception). I'm telling you from my own experience 80%+ of the design industry uses Macs. And as far as open source goes, are you joking? Seriously I know people in film and music as well and I've never seen a single person use open source.

It seems you have let your own bias against Macs distort reality.

LMAO! So true, true.

Find a laptop of comparable BUILD to the Apple (not just specs), and the price gap is not nearly what peaople suggest. Yeah, a lot of people make a Core i7 with a hot gfx card, but price Apple against a Toshiba Qosmio or Asus RoG and see how it stacks up. And software licensing from the App store for Mac is WAY cooler than the draconian nonsense handed down by some of the other players. I can install Aperture and Final Cut on how many systems (Legally)? Read that Sony Vegas EULA, or Adobe.

Apple is such parasite. Imagine patenting the "slide to unlock" feature of most Android phones something that happened before their trashy iPhone came out with the feature.

To Apple, price is part of the spec so it gets a bump too. Higher number means greater... also gives an illusion that their product is valuable.
