Good Evening!
I'm interesting in upgrading my mid 2012 MacPro. Ive had the Desktop for a little over three years and i've noticed that its just running slower and slower these days... Boot-ups are taking longer, more memory intensive apps like word, and excel are on their knees to start up, I've even noticed some drag in Firefox.
Ive tried to reformat my drives, installed a new copy of OSx 10.10 and used time machine to restore my important data. I also used CCleaner for the machine and still nothing...
I mostly use the machine for personal use like web surfing, emails, finances, and my daily class work. I some times dabble in gaming however its becoming few and far between anymore.
The Mac is mostly a basic system. Its a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3.2Ghz machine. I did add some more RAM (6GB total), another 1TB drive (2Tb total). 1TB serves as my main drive, while my second is my Time-Machine Drive. The Video Card is Standard a 1GB Radeon 5770.
I do also run a older Dell Windows PC that acts like as web and file server. Its running Windows 2008 Server. If at all POSSIBLE i would like to move this over to my MAC... Not sure if this is even possible. Maybe Virtualize(sp) this environment?
Anyways... I'm looking at the following for upgrades... please let me know what you think.
OWC - 480GB - Mercury Accelsior E2 PCIe SSD
OWC Memory 16.0GB 4 x 4.0GB PC8500 DDR3 Kit
My reasoning behind these two items is that the PCIe will increase my read and write to around 688mb/s. It should drastically increase the performance of the machine.
Upgrading to 16Gb of RAM should allow the machine to move around Apps with ease.
Adding both of these may also help me in my quest to migrate my Server Environment over to my MacPro. The PCIe SSD should be more than powerful enough to handle the load of the VMware. and the addition of more RAM cant hurt either. My only concern is the processor.
I'm in no way shape or form a professional when it comes to this topic. This is why i am looking to the forum community for some assistance.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks!
