Good Evening!
I'm interesting in upgrading my mid 2012 MacPro. Ive had the Desktop for a little over three years and i've noticed that its just running slower and slower these days... Boot-ups are taking longer, more memory intensive apps like word, and excel are on their knees to start up, I've even noticed some drag in Firefox.

Ive tried to reformat my drives, installed a new copy of OSx 10.10 and used time machine to restore my important data. I also used CCleaner for the machine and still nothing...

I mostly use the machine for personal use like web surfing, emails, finances, and my daily class work. I some times dabble in gaming however its becoming few and far between anymore.

The Mac is mostly a basic system. Its a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3.2Ghz machine. I did add some more RAM (6GB total), another 1TB drive (2Tb total). 1TB serves as my main drive, while my second is my Time-Machine Drive. The Video Card is Standard a 1GB Radeon 5770.

I do also run a older Dell Windows PC that acts like as web and file server. Its running Windows 2008 Server. If at all POSSIBLE i would like to move this over to my MAC... Not sure if this is even possible. Maybe Virtualize(sp) this environment?

Anyways... I'm looking at the following for upgrades... please let me know what you think.

OWC - 480GB - Mercury Accelsior E2 PCIe SSD
OWC Memory 16.0GB 4 x 4.0GB PC8500 DDR3 Kit

My reasoning behind these two items is that the PCIe will increase my read and write to around 688mb/s. It should drastically increase the performance of the machine.

Upgrading to 16Gb of RAM should allow the machine to move around Apps with ease.

Adding both of these may also help me in my quest to migrate my Server Environment over to my MacPro. The PCIe SSD should be more than powerful enough to handle the load of the VMware. and the addition of more RAM cant hurt either. My only concern is the processor.

I'm in no way shape or form a professional when it comes to this topic. This is why i am looking to the forum community for some assistance.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

hello again ,

here is what you need to get :

1- M.2 PCIe SSD to PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter

2- Samsung SM951 AHCI M.2 PCie 3.0 x4 SSD

this card is rated 2200MB/s read and 1600MB/s write . and in Macpros , it gives 1400MB/s read write for real.

why slower and not 2200? because Mac pro has PCIe 2.0 while you need PCIe 3.0 for more speed.

BUT it still BLAZING FAST at 1400MB/s

you can read about it here :

http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sata-express-meets-the-09-macpro-bootable-ngff-pcie-ssd.1685821/

and I would go with the Lycom DT-120 M.2 Adapter

be sure to get Samsung 951 and NOT 941 ... get the new one.

-----------------

now the next upgrade : CPU :

you can...

dont buy anything from OWC they are overpriced.

with today technology PCIe SSD can reach 2000MB/s on macs by the way. they just sell you old crap.

give me a minute to research for you.

I need the full model number of your mac please as well.

now the next upgrade : CPU :

you can upgrade fro 4 cores to 6 cores starting from $100 only

your options :

6 Cores 3.43 Ghz Intel® Xeon® Processor W3690 , the fastest you can add in your machine

can be found on ebay starting from $150

example : http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=xeon++W3690&_sop=15

there are the 3.3 W3680 and the 3.1 W3670 but they sell on ebay same price of the W3690 , so get the fastest one ofc the W3690.

3- Memory : the intel Xeon W3690 , supports max of 24 G of DDR3 1333 ram . so get 3x8G 1333 DDR3 ECC registered Ram . dont get 4x4 ... also it s better to use 3 sticks to allow FULL THREE CHANNEL MODE . if you add 4 it will be slower FLEX mode and not triple channel mode.

if you need more assistance I am around .. if you want help where to buy from tell me where you live and I will try to help.

and ignore owc they are overpriced.

friends hi,
i will also upgrade my macpro mid 2012, MD770LL/A in terms of having SSD. my serial is DGKJ101HF4MC. I need 1 TB SSD exactly. they offered me: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/PCIe/OWC/Mercury_Accelsior/RAID if we say it is too overpriced: should i also buy:

1- M.2 PCIe SSD to PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter (Lycom DT-120 M.2 Adapter)
2- Samsung SM951 AHCI M.2 PCie 3.0 x4 SSD (is there any 2tb version of it?)

which ssd do you recommend me?
