I recently bought a MacPro (Model: A1186) without a harddrive. I purchased a new internal hard drive and installed OS X Lion via a external enclosure (this was tested from a MacBook Pro and booted just fine).

When I put the new drive into the MacPro it will allow me to select the drive (when I press command + r) but nothing happens. The apple logo will appear and the spinning wheel for about a minute and then that disappears. I am left with a grey screen.

I have checked to make sure the RAM is secure and it seems fine. Any suggestions?

It sounds like a driver issue. For the record I very little experience with Apple software. But my guess is that the computer is expecting to boot from a USB (or firewire) device so the drivers are installed accordingly. What you need to do is image the old drive to the new one, which is a bit different then just installing it from a disk. That's just my guess.
