Hey, my friend is convinced that Mac's are better than PC. I have already told him that that is SO wrong, and that PC is better, They're cheaper, can play more games, are compatible with more software, and are a better deal than Mac's. anyone else got anything I can through at him? thanks!

You're friend is foolish.

PC:
Cheaper
More Powerful
Easy
Safe(It's not a virus magnet unless your an idiot)
Customization
Easier to Upgrade
More freedom to choose how you use the computer

Mac:
You do it this way
OVERPRICED
No real upgrading
Almost idiot proof OS

A mac is a PC too. Apple has it's customers in it's back pocket with marketing. PCs from Dell or HP are not that great and over priced too, but no where near as bad as Apple. Custom PC = Win

Both of you are partially correct. Macs are more expensive, but also queiter than ANY PC unless you build your own or spend a lot of money for a custom job.

Mac Pros or Imacs can also run "way MORE" software. You have your Mac apps, then you buy a copy of windows OEM (hundred bucks...) and use bootcamp to run ALL windows software. When I say ALL of it, I mean literally ALL windows software.

The whole, "They Cannot game" is BS, I played BF3 on high on my 2 year old IMAC with 5750m. The whole system drew 200 watts on load and was extremely quiet while playing and silent ALL the rest of the time.

There Are couple of things to consider however, If you get the lower end ones, they suck for gaming. The whole point is to get you to buy the 27" with the good GPU in it, that said, it is a good idea since it wont be upgradeable. They do cost more initially too, but you get quiet and they are hassle free generally and don't do weird things like hang when booting or get weird errors. It's a trade off between cost vs features and the tradeoff of hassle free vs customizing.

Just to be fair, I just Sold my imac in January for 1,450 paid 2400 for all of it 2 years ago, but got a lot of extra stuff which I've kept. I took that money and built a new pc because I wanted something as quiet as my IMAC while being more powerful. That is not as cheap to do as you would think since the new IMACS are really stupid fast ! I wanted a 680 and SSD is why I sold mine. To get what I wanted AND have it quiet, I spent about 3200 on the components anyhow. That is with a lower cost IPS monitor (a 24") too.

Had I really sat down and figured out what I was going to spend (I just wanted to build something kick ass), I woulda just bought an Imac for 3000, spent a 100 bucks on windows and a hundred on the extended applecare warranty which covers everything for 3 years ! That and this box takes up a crapload more space.

My imac was a 2.93 27" with 5750m, my new system is a standard PC, with Maximus V Formula, 32 gigs, 840 pro x 2, Asus gtx 680 and Seasonic Platinum 750.

"but you get quiet and they are hassle free generally and don't do weird things like hang when booting or get weird errors."

Most normal desktop PCs are quiet unless they are really crappy PCs with noisy fans.

Are you saying macs don't hand or get weird errors, last time I checked they also do too.

You spent " 3200" on components to get it quiet quiet-what? I could build a super quiet mini-itx system that's better than most macs for less than 3200.

I do agree macs are generally easy to use and don't have very many problems overall, but really, they are not worth it. They are way to much of a closed eco-system.

The cost of having mac is ridiculous with the initial cost, warranties, repair costs, etc.

Oh lord, flame war incoming 😀

With the software compatibility, you cant claim Mac's run everything because you can pay an extra $100 to install Windows on to your Apple Machine. Half the point of Mac's is the OSX operating system, by removing that you might as well just have built a PC in the first place.
Also, we could say that as well if we wanted. Look up "Hackintosh" if you have the time.

The iMac's silence is directly tied into its low power consumption. Less power consumption, less heat to dissipate. I imagine iMac's use the chassis as a heatsink.
But then again, when iMac's are effectively laptops in a bigger case, you can get away with doing that.

Your really going to try and convince us that low end laptop graphics can max out games? Which explains why you have a 680 in your PC.

How is that PC standard

I get the same thing from a couple of friends who only just recently started playing with computers. They got a pc, couldn't work it, then bought a mac.

I told them at some point that I just built a new pc, and they tell me it's sh1t and I should have bought a mac because they kick the a$$ of any pc and are virus proof, and the processors of mac and 10x faster than pc.

I'm not saying either are better but each of them do have their own benefits depending upon what you want to do.

So would it be correct to say that the answer is actually subjective?

Agreed. I could build 2 nice gaming PC's for the price of one stupid Mac Book Pro. Plus it drives me nuts they don't have a right click button.

Mac Pros are PCs for people who don't know PCs. You pay too much money for ridiculously old hardware - they still use first generation Xeons (LGA 1366) and the video card included is a rather old Radeon 5770. Newer Radeons and NVIDIA cards are becoming available for Macs but they're still the last generation. While they're getting Radeon 7950 and GTX 680s, we're moving on to Radeon 8XXX and GTX 7XX. Honestly if you've got that kind of cash and you want a pre built rig, I'd get a Falcon Northwest Mach V.

Sounds like a thread to get people riled up. Obviously you'll get different answers depending on where you ask.

1. MBP (MacBook Pro) is a very decent laptop. Small, compact, lightweight, and with excellent battery life. Great for travel. I would buy it if I had the money.
2. Mac Pro is a different story. Ridiculously overpriced, ugly case design, and not state of the art. Even for computer-illiterates I don't recommend a Mac Pro.

Apple iMacs are basically laptops in a bigger case. they are perfectly adequate for web browsing, video viewing, and lightweight gaming. for what you PAY however, you can probly build a much better actual PC. the innards are the same, but Apple charges you an arm and a leg for the same things ($200 per 4GB of RAM, for instance)
