Hey guys,

I have a Mag B560 Tomahawk Wifi rig and I already have 2 SSD's installed(970 evo plus 500gb and Evo 850 evo 500gb) and I'd like to buy a 3rd one Samsung Evo 990 plus 1TB and I'm wondering if that generation is compatible. I have 3 M2 slots but I think I only have 1 PCIE 4 slot(which probably my 970 is installed at) so would 990 plus work with any other slot and if it does, how much of a performance decrease I'm looking at ?
Would it be smarter to remove 970 and 850 and install 990 on the PCIE4 and reinstall my system on it rather than 970 ?

Solution
So I got my OS installed on my Samsung 970 evo plus which is in the M2_1 slot.
I just bought a Samsung 990 evo plus which I mistakenly installed on the M2_2 and I moved my samsung evo 850(my oldest ssd) to the M2_3, which stopped working.
Leave the OS where it is, on the 970. M2_1.

Move the 850 to the M2_2.
Move the 990 to the M2_3.
Yes it's compatible, you merely need to drop the 990 Evo Plus into slot M2_1 though you should also be on an 11th Gen Intel processor to take advantage of the slot. Please include the specs to your build in the thread's body. Sig space specs can and will change over time and when that happens, this thread and it's relevant suggestions are rendered moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now.

What are you getting the 9900 Evo Plus? A game library drive? If so, then no you don't need to reinstall the OS onto it, neither will you be able to tell the difference in speeds when on a PCIe3.0x4 and PCIe 4.0x4(that's the highest your motherboard will allow you to go) drive in real world, day to day tasks.

Make sure you're on the latest BIOS version for your motherboard prior to performing any hardware upgrades.

Hey,
I do have an 11th gen cpu(11600k). My specs are:
32gb 3000mhz ddr4 ram
B560 tomahawk wifi
11600k
RTX 4070
Corsair RM750 80 + gold
Samsung Evo Plus 970 and Samsung 850 Evo

I'm going to use 990 evo plus for a game library yes. So can I slot it into any of the M2 slots? Two of them are occupied by 970 (main drive) and 850 respectively.

And yes I updated my bios last month to the latest one. I'll recheck if they have released anything recent.

Fit the ssd in the empty slot and go.
Alright will do. I ordered the SSD it's arriving today. Will report back.

So what I did is, I removed the evo 850 from M2 second slot(for some reason the mobo only has 2 thermal plates for slots 1 and 2) and I installed the 990 evo plus on the second slot. I moved the 850 evo to the 3rd slot.
I booted the PC(for some reason it didn't boot a couple of times) and I don't see 850 evo anymore. I managed the new 990, it is working well but my old 850(in 3rd slot now) doesn't show any more.
What might be the problem ?

I forgot to add, I also have another 250 gb ssd that is connected through the Sata port. That is also working without problems.
So now I have C🙁970 evo plus) D🙁Toshiba 250 gb sata) and F🙁990 evo plus). My 850 used to be E: but now it is gone :/

So I checked the Samsung Evo 850 specs page and it says :
- SATA 6Gb/s SSD for Client PCs
- M.2 (2280)

And this is the MOBO specs :
6x SATA 6Gb/s ports (from B560 chipset)∙
3x M.2 slots (Key M)

▪ M2_1 slot (from CPU)▫
Available only on 11th Gen Intel® CPU▫
Supports up to PCIe 4.0 x4▫
Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280/ 22110 storage devices

▪ M2_2* slot (from B560 chipset)▫
Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4▫
Supports SATA up to 6Gb/s▫
Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280 storage devices

▪ M2_3** slot (from B560 chipset)▫
Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4▫
Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280 storage devices▫
Intel® Optane™ Memory Ready***

While it says sata 6gigs, the M2 classification is 2280, which the M2_3 slot should be supporting.

The 850 EVO is a SATA drive, M.2 format.

It can ONLY go in the M2_2 slot.
M2_1 and M2_3 only support NVMe drives.

Yeah I'm cooked. I have to reinstall everything.
Say If I were to just switch the 850 and 990, and reboot the PC, would it work normal ?
Also additional question, is it worth formatting everything, installing 990 in the M2_1(CPU) and reinstall the OS on it ? Would it make a big difference ? I heard 990 evo plus is much faster than 970 evo plus.

Whoa whoa..more details please.

Where is the OS installed now?
Size/make/model of ALL drives currently in the system.

There are possible ways to change things around without a full OS reinstall.
