Mage Familiar

Been Playing both BG I and BG II for some time. Would like to know if any of
you have figured out how an in Party Mage can acquire a Familiar.
And Yes...I do have all the nice little Cheat Stuff but that is not the
point.

Only the protagonist can have a familiar. So the only way to get one
is if you play a mage.

You can have any class protagonist have a familiar but of course thats
cheating
