Hello all, hope you are all well. I don't know if this is a component thread or storage thread, but I'm starting in component. [thread moved by moderator]

For some time, I have been using a 6 Port USB Hub from IOGear: https://www.iogear.com/product/GUH326/
It has worked fine with no issues. Both USB 3.0 External hard drives and other USB items I have had have worked playing video, audio, for file access, game controllers, etc.

The hard drives in question that I am referencing below are these: StoreJet Trancends

I started to get more and more external devices though that need USB access like GoPros, Thumb Drives, SD Card readers, Game Controllers etc. and I was getting tired of having to pull out something from one of the ports on the hub just to use something else for a minute.

I figured I would buy a 16 Port USB 3.0 Hub with its own 90 Watt external power source, and would eliminate having to remove and re-add devices constantly, just keep them all plugged in. This is the Hub I purchased: ACASIS 16 Port USB Hub

So I plugged it all in and got all my devices connected. Everything is powered and works, but now when I'm playing video from either one of my USB Drives, the video freezes for 5-10 seconds every 20 minutes or so, and an error comes up in Event Viewer: "The IO operation at logical block address 0xc3e366d0 for Disk 4 (PDO name: \Device\000000df) was retried."

Both of these drives are identical, and both work on other systems that I have and don't get this issue on my laptop.

To reiterate, the issue I'm having is: My video while playing will freeze, no matter what type of video it is, and this error will be in event viewer: Event ID 153: "The IO operation at logical block address 0xc3e366d0 for Disk 4 (PDO name: \Device\000000df) was retried."

The steps I have gone through with no success:
  1. Looked through power options for the computer and all devices and made sure that non of them could shut off the USB ports or suspend power.
  2. Reinstalled the USB Mass Storage Device and USB Hub drivers.
  3. Turned off all ports on my Hub except the two for the drives.
  4. Plugging in my Hub to its own wall socket apart from my computers setup.
  5. Made sure that my system has USB Selective suspend off.
  6. Made sure that all the devices connected via USB had the "Allow System to turn off this device to save power" boxes unchecked in device manager.
  7. Ran sfc /scannow, chkdsk /f /r /c on both drives with no errors
  8. Reconnected the cables multiple times.
  9. Tried a different USB port on my motherboard for the hub
  10. Tried every single port on the hub for the drives.
My real problem is that I don't know why this hub would be having issues if it has its own power source. My 6 Port USB hub worked fine all the time day and night with no issues and also had its own power source.

Is it due to the amount of ports? Do I need those special USB 3.0 "Charging Ports" on some hubs that are advertised out there just to make sure that there's enough power for these drives? Because I'm assuming that this is some sort of power issue and that this message in event viewer is a surprise disconnect of the drive. I don't want to just buy another 16 port hub and have the same problem. I want to know why this isn't working and make sure that I get something that will work next time.

Please let me know of any more fixes that I may have missed or suggestions on a new hub that you know works for you with external physical hard disks, not SSDs that you can play video and use with.

Yes, I know this well. However, I dont think you really read my post thoroughly.

Quote from my own post: "Both of these drives are identical, and both work on other systems that I have and don't get this issue on my laptop. "

This is specifically a USB Hub issue and I would like suggestions to any hubs that have guaranteed worked for any user here with mechanical USB HDDs.

Do you get the same errors with only the single drive in question connected thru the hub? (Certainly with multiple devices all running from a hub into a single USB port you could at some point suffer glitchy bandwidth issues, what with up to 16 devices all funneled thru a single USB port...; worse yet, it may only manifest itself with some computers and/or some laptops when using that hub...with those drives...; lots of variables!)
