If I clone my present Win7 hd to an ssd, will the Sandisk cloning software make the SSD bootable so that I can then remove the hd?

Thank you WebBeachBoy. So to switch from HD to SSD, do I reinstall Win7 on the SSD and then clone the HD before removing it, or will the cloning process overwrite Win7?

Both your HDD and the SSD are installed in the same PC, yes?
And you would plan to use the SSD in the same PC after you clone the contents of your HDD, your former boot drive, yes?
If your answers are "Yes" then there should be no problem in cloning the contents of your bootable HDD to the SSD. The SSD will serve as your new boot drive and I assume you're going to utilize the HDD as a storage/backup drive, right?
After the cloning operation has completed ensure that your SSD is connected to the first SATA connector in your system. That connector will be designated either SATA 0 or SATA 1. The HDD should be connected to any of the following SATA connectors.

BTW, I've never used the SanDisk disk-cloning tool and I'm assuming it's reliable and will do the job. And I further assume that you're perfectly satisfied with the Win 7 OS currently installed on your HDD in that the drive boots & functions without any problems, right?

Also keep a windows repair disk handy just in case windows doesnt like the cloning process.
Possibly itd be a good idea to defrag the clone before you boot from it, once booted alot of windows elements wont move in a defrag.

You will be fine cloning the HDD to the SSD and then removing the HDD. I've made a practice of plugging the SSD into the sata port that the HDD was in before booting from the SSD. Please note that a full reinstall of win7 is the recommended method so that windows detects the SSD and makes appropriate changes.

You can ignore the SYSprep tool referenced below, you dont need to do this since its staying in the same pc.

Completely incorrect.
Generally, the cloning operation makes the new drive totally bootable.

Be it SanDisk, Samsung, or other current migration software.

ArtPog, thank you for your help. I have finally installed the SSD (Samsung 850 EVO). This is the rest of the story:
My computer guy had installed mirrored HDs. One eventually failed, so I replaced that one with the SSD and successfully cloned from the remaining HD. I can still hear the PC accessing the HD. I'm concerned that the PC will not boot if I remove the HD. What is the next step? How do I remove the mirror set up?

Just run the SanDisk software. You'll be fine. (Assuming the size of your current data is smaller than the size of the new SSD)

EDIT: Samsung software. Works just as well.

After the migration operation:
Power down
Disconnect the HDD's.
See if it boots

If yes, then simply wipe the HDD's
If no, then we have other issues.
